I just went to the doctor today and he prescribed me 50 mg of Trazodone to take at night to help me sleep, and I'm also currently been taking 30 mg of Prozac daily. I've heard that Trazodone is a sedative, and I've also heard that it's an anti-depressant. Is it both, or if not, which one is it?
He prescribed Trazodone for me because I have a lot of anxiety at night. That's when I have all the scary thoughts about suicide, and I worry a lot about what's happened during the day and what is going to happen the next day.
Is anyone else taking Trazodone for this reason? Thanks for your help!

Trazodone:
oral antidepressant (trade name Desyrel) that is a nontricyclic drug used as a sedative.

Now have I gotten you more confused? ;-)

Hi Pinkstar!
Finally, someone else who has been prescribed Trazodone!
It is an anti-depressant that aids in sleep.
pinkstar,
hi, My bil who is an md told me it is a sedative, but my research has told me it is both.
I take 60 mg of generic prozac(40 in the am and 20 in the pm) and 50mg of trazodone to help me sleep in the pm. I have had no ill effects in taking this combo. I also take other prescribed meds. I was very nervous at first and did a lot of online reading. Even waited 4 or 5 days before taking it and talked to my t along with my md about it. Everyone was very reasuring and I really needed to sleep. So I finally tried it. It did help me to sleep and I was ok the next day, but I would still wake up occasionally about 3 and 5 am. So the doc had said I could increase by 50mg as needed. I tried this slept very well, but was groggy and fuzzy the entire next day. So waking up occasionally and falling right back to sleep is not so bad.
This is just my experience. I hope it helps you to decide what you want to do. I would say do some research if you're still not sure. There is a site here on ivillage that can help.
