Well the past couple of days hasn't been that great.

i worked at a bank for a while. they all have different rules for handling checks, of course. at the one i worked for, we had an 11 day period for checks with large amounts or that the management was suspicious of. if it is odd activity for your account, then they put a *hold* on it. however, if you were someone who regularly had such amounts come through or checks from this certain place, then they wouldn't hold it. only us NORMAL folks were considered the type who would try to defraud them, i suppose! ;)
it was very frustrating for customers at times, i felt sorry for them. obviously my hands were tied, but still i felt bad. a lady brought an insurance check through, wanted 1500 deposited and 7 grand back. for her account, this was very strange. insurance checks are routinely held at many banks because a lot of times they are fraudulent (about 50% of the time). they said they'd give her 100 for spending money, and hold the rest, or give her the check back. needless to say, she took her check back. not sure what she wanted 7000 in cash for, but she did!
they could call ahead and see if the funds were available. now, with check 21 in place, the electronic transfer of funds caused by written check happens much faster than normal. they must be worried that by the time the check gets to the other bank the funds will no longer be available and then they'd be out the full amount (or rather, you would be charge then).
that really sucks! i hate banks. i hate them even more since i lost my job over this small detail, a mistake that is made daily by other tellers and even our CSR's! my boss just didn't like me, although i don't know why. it was convenient to get rid of me then, i guess. that's ok, i didn't particularly like the stuffiness of a bank.
good luck getting your money!!!
