What to do when you feel bad again?
| Tue, 01-25-2005 - 11:08am |
It's going to be my one year anniversary since I tried to commit suicide and ended up in a mental hospital. I feel like I'm going through the same symptoms again of depression, sleepy, crying spells, nauseous, decreased appetite and just a feeling of dread. I know that it's because of what happened last year. I would tell my parents but I just don't want them to worry about me again like before. I want to handle it like an adult and be dependent about it. What can I do when I start feeling down? I got sick a week ago and started to take meds that made me sleepy so that could be causing my drowsiness. Anyone help please?
Thanks
-J

First of all, take care of yourself. If it means sleeping a little more, so be it. Remember that the past is in the past, and it's hard to take care of the present when you dwell on the past. (I'm guilty - I do it all the time. Trying to break that habit even as we speak.)
If you need help, ask for it. Don't worry about feeling dependent. A strong, wise person recognizes and acknowledges when she needs help. It isn't a sign of immaturity or weakness. Your parents worry about you because they love you. Let them love you.
Good luck.
J.,
I have suffered from depression for years and I have discovered leaning on family is a good thing. I am certain your parents adore you and want to help you in anyway they can. You are obviously an intelligent person having earned a doctorate. (unlike my Juris Doctor where I have met many not so bright lawyers :) ) You know that you need therapy and medication. You must realize you should not self isolate.
Frankly, I often find that I need extra sleep or I get badly depressed. Be gentle with yourself. Talk to your psychiatrist. Talk with your friends and family. Stop being down on yourself. Also, give yourself credit for getting through that horrible time last year and ask yourself what you have learned.
Good luck.
