Are there any good books on depression that aren't self-help? I have depression and I want to get one for my boyfriend because I think it would be a good way of helping him to understand it better since he likes reading psychology books, such as "Phantoms in the Brain", "Synaptic Self", and "A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness".

The best book I've read is "The Noonday Demon", by Andrew Solomon.

Kay Redmond Jamison has written several books on depression. She suffers from bipolar & is considered an expert. The one I thought was best, *An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness.* William Styron the writer also suffered from depression & his memoir,
Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness is excellent. You might consider, How You Can Survive When They're Depressed : Living and Coping With Depression Fallout by Anne Sheffield. GL! jan
