My DH likes the name WIlliam (nn Will), but we really don't want anything that is too popular right now. I have heard of a lot of Will's lately....just wondering if you have too. Seems like it is a common name to use right now.

My DS's name is William and we call him Will. We have not met any other Wills. I have seen a few on these boards though. I think that William is always somewhat popular, but some go by William or Bill too.

In my area, I would call it "familiar" but not popular, even though it's #11 on the SSA site.

to me it's one of those "older" names that you didn't hear through the trendy era of the 70s, 80s or 90s very much and now it's back.

I know a couple little boys with this name, certainly not to the saturation level. but I'm judging from your screen name that your last name is Whalen. if that's the case, I don't think those two W names sound very good together - William Whalen.

not only do they start with the same letter, they have a lot of the same letters and sounds in them.

good luck

I only know one William, my cousin's four-year-old.

I like it and it doesn't strike me as overly popular right now.

I think it is a great name. Classic, but Will has a current sound to it. I know of only one boy named Will. Go with what you like, but William/Will gets my vote. Good Luck!

My dad's name is William, and I love the name. I don't think it's overly popular, in the sense that it's "just catching on," but I think it's common. I think it's a name like Michael, John, Christopher, Thomas, James, etc. Those are all classic, traditionally male names, and I think they will always be commonly used -- past, present, and future. But William is certainly not popular, as in "trendy" -- like some names that have more recently come to the forefront of name popularity out of virtually nowhere.

Personally, I prefer more traditional names, and William is a good solid name. If you love it, you should use it!

Also, I have heard of a few people going with William and using the nn Liam (given the "Irish trend" in boys names lately). So I think Will is a less "trendy" nn.

Our oldest son's name is William/Will, he'll be 4 in September. I know 1 other William who is 18 months old. He goes by William or Willie.

I love the name Will and am glad I used it no matter how popular. It is a classic.

Best of luck.

We had a DS this year and named him William Jude but nn Liam (as I'm from Ireland originally). I so far have only heard of Wills or Williams that are a bit older, named mainly for the future king. I think it is one of those traditional names that is becoming increasingly popular again elsewhere (although it always has been popular here in the UK) but I wouldn't worry about it really. Its not a unique name but its not so overused that people will think your DS dull! lol, I'm sick of meeting people called John lately, that's the name of the week for me!

I think William will always be popular and never too popular. It's a classic that hopefully will be around forever.

I'm not too keen on William Whalen, if that's the LN. JMO!
