I am pregnant with my 4th. I have 2 daughters named Charlotte and Violet. My Grandmother was named Doris Virginia and she was an amazing woman. I am considering naming my baby after her. What are your thoughts on the first name Doris?

I had an Aunt Doris and an Aunt Virginia. They were Doris Adeline and Virginia Joycelyn. My friend has a daughter named Virginia Anne (the Anne after her mom). She does not have a nn.

I do not like Doris but I love Virginia.I think Ginny is a cute nn or Ginna(Jenna). No nn is ok too.

I know someone who named her daughter Doris (after her mother), but called her "Dori" from the get-go. I don't like Doris, but I can live with Dori.

I think Doris is a little outdated, but it would be a very special middle name. I am planning on using my grandmother's name if we have a girl (Madeline). I do think the nn Dori is cute though, but I tend to associate the name Doris with older women. JMO.

I think it's really out-dated. it's now what you consider one of the older "classics" still in use. Most of the Doris' are between 45 and 70. there are a few around under 45, but not much younger than 40 if at all. I would not recommend this.

I would recommend finding a name you like and using Virginia as the middle name for her.

I have to agree that Doris as a first name would be nms, but I LOVE Virginia and think it would be perfect with your othre daughter's names (also two of my faves, beautiful!). How about Virginia Doris? I really like Charlotte, Violet, and Virginia together. Congratulations!

In a way, I like it...and precisely b/c it sounds a little "old", lol. I prefer to call it a "nostalgic" name, however.

For some reason, Doris is not a very well liked name, but I actually think it's rather wonderful. It's a Greek name, so you would think that it would have the same sort of appeal as names like Danae or Damaris, but it's mired down with heavy, old-lady associations that are sometimes hard to get past. I think Doris has a lot of potential, but I also think you'll take a lot of flack if you choose it.

If you hadn't posted that your grandmother's middle name was Virginia, I would have told you to go for it, but you did, and I LOVE the name Virginia. So, personally, forget Doris, or use it as a middle name, and go with Virginia!!!

I love your other girls' names, too. (I have a daughter named Charlotte myself, but seriously considered naming her Virginia. Violet and Viola were both on my originial list of girls' names, too.) I think Virginia sounds better with them than Doris does.

Good luck to you, and please let us know what you decide.

Cara

P.S. It might be fun if you did another post with your daughters' names and asked people what to name this next baby. Since Charlotte & Violet are such wonderful names, I'd be interested to see what people come up with to go with them.

Thank you for your kind words. I still have a lot of time to think this one through. I'm only 2 months pregant, but I'm a planner and I like to have things decided early!

I love old-fashioned names, but somehow Charlotte has come back into style, and Violet is headed that way, but Doris is not having a renaissance. Yet it fits in with the other two girls' names--they were all popular at the same time once upon a time. If I named a daughter Doris, I would probably call her Dorie or Dora from the beginning, however. Doris doesn't sound like a little girl's name, but it sounds like a woman's name.

I went to high school with a Doris, though. She was a basketball star, and everyone knew her, and no one thought she had an odd or old-fashioned name, now that I think of it. She just was Doris. I think it could work. Once your daugher is named I can't imagine anyone thinking twice about it. What a lovely way to honor your grandmother.
