Hey all!! I really need help. My SIL is in the sca. For those of you who don't know what that is......basically it's a club where everything is set in the renaissance time period and you have to be completly authentic. They have duels, appoint kings Queens and barons, the dress, talk, and act in charecter. Now the problem is my sis does not have a period name. It has to come from that time period and they have to have documentation that the name was used in the time. So, I'm not asking for documentation from you guys, but you could think of any names that might come from that period it would be helpful. Thanks, it would really help me out.

Christy,

I can give you a few from 1200 to 1450. I will list some of the prettier ones. Annora, Beatrice, Cedany and Clarell, Eleanora and Emelin, Gemma and for a bit of laughter Godiva. Just think Your SIL can call herself Lady Godiva. Do you have the white horse? Then there is Henna and Isabel,Kenner, Kinnia, Love, Luveday, Lyneya, Malina and Merewen, Osanna and Reina, Theda and Thora.

If your a fan of Shakespeare he has some pretty good names that might be suitable. The bioigraphies of the royalty in those days will also be of some help.

It may very well be that a lot of virtue names were used in those days. Names like Bliss, Harmony, Peace, Charity.

Well, she should talk to her local Heraldry Officer, they're the ones that can help you find a proper period name (documented and all).. they should have quite a few good ideas for places to look for names. If not, here's the link they SCA provides for it's own "medieval name archive" : http://www.panix.com/~mittle/names/

Granted, those are all English names, so if she's looking for something from another ethnic group (German, Viking, Scottish, etc.) she should really contact her Heraldry Officer. Every SCA chapter has one and generally they're quite helpful.

Devin (Who's thinking of rejoining the SCA herself, after 10 years out.)
