Common last name problem...

We are TTC #3.

Our last name is Smith, so I've usually been leaning toward more uncommon names, though not way out there either. But a few of my favorites are VERY traditional. I am wondering how awful these are when put with the last name Smith?

See what I mean...

William Smith (I like the nn Will) - after 3 grandfathers...but you end up with Will Smith!

John Smith (I just can't do this...)

Katherine Smith (after grandma) - I LOVE Kate...but Kate Smith? (famous singer...)

Mary Smith? - I love Mary! but this sounds like a joke name to me...

Anna Smith (does anyone else think Anna Nicole? what's worse, my mn is Nicole, so I could really do Anna Nicole Smith...)

Are these as bad as I think they are?

Smith is tough - My second husband's name is Brown, so we find ourselves also seeking unique first names. Our first child together is named Kevasi.

Katherine Smith, even Kate Smith, sound fine to me. John, William, and Mary - I'd have to agree with you - they are a bit common when combined with Smith. But other than being hard-to-find in phone directories, I don't see real disadvantages to having a common first and last combination.

At the same time, I would encourage you to branch out and look around for adventurous names! You never know what you might find.

Best of luck to you!

From one Smith to another, I feel your pain. I am also a Smith and have tried to give my children slightly more unusual yet not too unusual names. I too had the problem with some of the combinations you had mentioned. DH and I both liked John. However, we just could not do it. We also really, really like Anna, but for the same reason you mentioned passed on it for our DD. It is still in the running if we ever have a #3. We also toyed with Mary for our DD. Our thoughts on that were to combine it with another name like Mary Grace, Mary Rose or Mary Kate. My DS is Leo Gabriel and my DD is Rebecca Clare. Other names we have considered during my pregnancies have been: Benjamin, Luke, Maximillan, Owen, Abigail, Leah, Lucy, Cecilia, Naomi and Hannah. Best of luck with your growing family.

Hhhhmmmm, I just don't think those names work as well as others might with your last name and other sons' names (which I love BTW). Caleb and Zion both sound biblical but a little out of the ordinary. I would use the names you suggested above as middle names (they are consistent with Matthew and Robert) and go for something biblical/slighly unusual for the first name. Some ideas:

Levi William

Canaan John

Leah Katherine

Lourdes Mary

Going along with biblical... Elijah and Rachel?

Some times I wonder why people kept those names. Not that it's bad or anything but my family dumped the can't-prounounce-those-imigrant-names-lets-go-with-the-first-word-we-think-of name after two generations and went back to Genestte. Bet you can't prounounce that or my DH LN either... Vigneault.

We are very French. ;o)

I wouldn't personally put any of them with Smith. I think you should stick to the idea you had with your boys, non-popular names. any traditional names there will be millions of with the last name Smith, on top of the famous person problem.

even some of the rarer names, there'll be other Smiths, but I would definitely avoid the celebrity ones.

I would stay away from Anna Nicole, John and Mary. Way too common or negative connotations...

What about William Smith, nn Liam?

Your other sons names are terrific-I am sure you will find an equally unique name for #3!

Caleb, Zion and...What about another Biblical name like Rebecca, Naomi, Ezra?

These names are of my own creation and so far I don't know of one famous person who uses them. I just don't like what everyone else likes. But I forgot something I had a friend and her last name was Smith. Let me see there was Cheryl Ann Smith, Loren Merle Smith, Darryl William Smith, Harold John Smith, Julian Edward Smith and Leatrice Marie Smith. They are more traditional and Leatrice is different.

It is not your place to cut down the other posters. I just so happen to like those names and I like the meanings that they have. Did you ever consider that? Each and every one of those names has a story to go with it. But oh no you are way too busy cutting me and my choices down!

What? As far as I can see, soccermom only answered the original post (quite nicely too).
