Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting to this board, but I didn't know where else to go. What do you think of the name Hamish for a boy? DH is Scottish and I should have seen this one coming!

I don't like it at all. I know someone on a dif. board who named her baby girl Ayrish.

I quite like Hamish, it's masculine, strong & distinguished sounding. I think it'd sound fantastic with a distinctly Scotch sounding surname. Sadly, I also think that an American Hamish wold be the recipient of "Ham" jokes even though it's not pronounced that way. Maybe your DH would think twice about the teasing potential and maybe look favorably on other Scots names, like: Dougal, Duncan, Malcolm, Alastair, Gavin or Graham/Graeme. You could also look here: http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/sco.html

There are a lot of traditional names used in Scotland too, such as Andrew, Charles, Thomas, William & James. Any one of those could be used comfortably with a Scots surname!

Hope that helps some!

Sorry, but I'm with your husband! I love it!

The previous poster is probably correct about the mispronounciations, though, and of course, it's your baby, too, not just your husband's. You should be able name the baby something that you both like.

If all else fails and you can't agree, wait until you are in labor, and he's feeling guilty about all the pain you are in. Then TELL him what the baby's name is going to be!

Good luck!

I actually LOVE the name Hamish but DH hated it...so we settled on Seamus (Shay-mus) which is the Celtic version of James (whereas Hamish would be the Scottish version). Any chance that you could find another similar "version" that both of you like?

I like it. I think it's very cute. You could always use a mn that is more common in the US & he can go buy that if he wants too.

I am definitely not a fan of Hamish. You should look into finding other Scottish names that you prefer over Hamish, maybe one of those will appeal to your husband. If all else fails you can name him Scot.

I like Hamish. As Mike Myers would say, "if it's not Scottish, it's crrrrraap!" :)

Maybe you can compromise and use Hamish as the middle name?

Yes, I agree that you have to fight this one! :) He really picked a whopper, in my opinion. I either read a book or saw a play with a personable pig named Hamish - and all I think of when I hear the name, is that pig ...

Best of luck finding something you both like!
