We both just came across a name that we both really like for some reason and it sounds great with our other 2 kids names. I just wonder if people will think it is too 'old' sounding? The name is Olive. What are your thoughts and if you like it any suggestions for middle names? TIA!

Oh, I'm sorry but I detest this name. It just reminds me of a little green vegetable or fruit-whatever they are. Or Olive Oyl. I don't find it even a tiny bit attractive. But that's just my opinion.

I love old fashioned names, so Olive gets my vote. I think it is oodles better than Olivia. If you like it, use it, and don't let other people's opinions worry you.

Good Luck!!

Olive does make me think of the food (but if Gwyneth can name her daughter Apple...). Honestly, I like old-fashioned names, too, but there are many others that I like so much more. Olive would not be my personal choice.

If you are unsure, maybe you could name your daughter Olivia, and then call her Olive all the time. I know people will say Olivia is ultra-popular, but truly, naming your daughter Olive is NOT going to make her distinctive in a sea of Olivias. In my opinion, that is like naming your daughter Kristen rather than Kristine or Anne vs. Anna -- the names SOUND similar, share nicknames, etc. If the popularity of Olivia is an issue (and I don't know if it is for you), I would select an old-fashioned name that is entirely different from the most popular names.

However, if you love Olive and it fits in with the style of your family names, you should use it. And it's a versatile name, because your daughter could always go by Liv or Livvy.

Olivia has become popular with my peers recently, perhaps because of Liv Tyler the actress. I do prefer Olivia to Olive. I just can't get over the green veggy thingy.

Also I am thinking of that show "veronicas closet" there was a lady on there her name was Olive and it was really cute. I think this could work, maybe you should put a mn w/ it and also tell us your other children.

Oh, goodness! Olive! Well, I think a lot of people WILL think you are nuts, but the name does have a lot of charm, really. It's not so far off from Olivia, which practically everyone is ga-ga over, except me. Maybe that's why I'm not so crazy about Olive. Too close to Olivia. I like old-fashioned names, but that's one I could do without.

I think the thing about Olive is that it's just not going seem very accessible to many people. It's very sophisticated, but most people just aren't going to get it. (I don't know who said this, but there's a quote that goes something like "No one ever lost money under-estimating the taste of the American public.") So, the question becomes, can you live with that? Can your daughter?

I haven't read all the other replies, so I'll go back and look, but could you tell us your other children's names? I'm trying to think of some other suggestions for you that have the same panache as Olive, just for fun. Ruby?

Thanks for posting!
