Just wondering if anyone here has any regrets about the names they have given there children. Whether it be the way a name is spelled or the name itself. Anything at all.

I guess I will go first. I named my second dd Alysa pronounced A-LIH-sah. I just LOVED the name and I still do. It is of Greek origin meaning Princess and somehow the name/spelling just fits her. Anyway, now I am thinking she may have problems down the line with people spelling or pronouncing it incorrectly since it was not spelled Alyssa. She is 3 1/2 and so far only a handful of people have made mistakes with her name so I guess that is a good sign. I don't think I would do things differently if I had it to do over again, but sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice.

I don't know as I have any regrets, but I do get disappointed that my son's name is used for girls commonly now. As for me, I LOVE my name: Suzanne. BUT, I am approaching 40 and people STILL get my name wrong all the time!!!! I am constantly called SUSAN. I have nothing against the name Susan, but it isn't my name. It's like calling a Catherine Cathleen all the time. And, people take the liberty of calling me Sue. My parents always said that if they wanted me to be called Sue, they would have named me Sue. My husband has the name of Sean. He is referred to as "Scott" more times than he can keep track of. And there are some people in our church that we only know as acquaintances who call him "Seen." When we named our children, we hoped to avoid all of the mispronunciations and instantaneous nicknaming. Our 4 year old is Anna, (can't get much more simple than that) and I still have to tell people that it is not Hannah. (Another lovely name, but again, not our daughter's) So, I throw in the towel. What can you do? Someone will always mispronounce, misspell, or just never learn your correct name. My mother is June and she still gets mail addressed to Jane and Jean. I told my husband we should name this one Bob (if it's a boy)......

Oh, sometimes I wish I had chosen a different mn for my DS. I knew I wanted it to start with an A so I just made a list of A names for my DH and told him to pick one. He picked Aidan, and I still pondered over Anthony or Andrew...although I'm glad I didn't use either one. I didn't realize Aidan was such a popular name. I only knew of one at the time, Aidan Quinn, actor and son of Anthony Quinn. That's my only regret, is that I used such a popular name as his mn. But I guess I couldn't have known, lol

I don't remember, too, why I was so adamant about using an A mn. I just was. Maybe because my mn starts with A...who knows!

I also liked the meaning of Aidan (little fiery one) because now my son IS a little fiery one! LOL He's got his daddy's temper and his mommy's mood swings. Heaven help us! LOL

nope, no regrets! My Cadence is such a Cadence to the T. she's such a free spirited, artistic and somewhat tomboyish little girl...oh she's a little firecracker too. Its a perfect name for her!

I'm rather glad we didn't name her Mercedes (our other choice, which was after my mother and grandmother...both carry that name) since I don't think it would have suited her at all...

I still love my ds' name - Jacob (Jake) I don't like the fact that it is soooooo popular now. He is 12 and it wasn't even in the top 10 back then. Oh well - guess you never know!

The only "sometime regret" I have about either of my DDs' names is regarding my younger DD's MN. Her full name is Natalie Rowan, and when I named her (exactly one year ago) I had the impression that Rowan was a fairly uncommon name used exclusively for girls. I soon discovered that there are male and female Rowans out there, including actor Rowan Atkinson, and Brooke Shields' baby daughter. I was quite disturbed by that. It's not like I thought she would be the only person with that name (LOL) but I just didn't realize it was so trendy...I was striving for a traditional FN of Natalie and then a 'different' MN. I don't mind so much, but on the baby sites I see a lot of little-boy Rowans being born now and that bugs me a little. I guess I should just be glad it is her MIDDLE NAME! And I do still love the name...so I don't know if it's really a REGRET...more of a slight disappointment.

gretchynb:

Don't know if it will make you feel any better or not, but I think that if I *hadn't* been familiar with the name Rowan from hearing it used a bit more often recently, I might have thought the name was odd--for a boy or a girl. I have personally never met anyone with the FN or MN of Rowan, and it wasn't until I started reading posts on this board that I even noticed that it might be getting used more often. It's still not one I would think of as a popular or trendy name, though. Maybe it will be this year, but if you check last year's Social Security lists of baby names, Rowan barely made the top 1000 for girls, and isn't even in the top 500 for boys either. I guess what I'm saying is that now that I've become a little more familiar with the name from seeing it more often on this message board, I've come to appreciate and even like the name; whereas, before I might have thought it too unusual due to lack of any familiarity with it. And even if the name is getting used more often now, I still think it definitely fits what you were going after in looking for a "different" MN to go with Natalie. You shouldn't have any regrets or be disappointed, because for some people (like me!) knowing that there are a few more Rowans out there--even if I've never met any of them--makes your DD's MN that much more appealing by giving it a familiarity that it wouldn't have otherwise had.
