Wondering what you think of the name Elle for a girl? I'm finally having my first girl after 3 boys and you'd think I'd have the name picked already, but I'm still not sure.

Anyway, Elle would be her given name (nn Ellie).

Thanks,
K

What about combining it w/another name. Like Elle-Marie.

I have always felt the name "Elle" is very confusing pronunciation-wise

on one hand it seems like it's meant to be pronounced Ellie, which is what you are saying will be her nick name

on the other hand, it seems like just ELL, are you saying it should be pronounced like Ella - with an a on the end?

if you want the pronunciation ELL-ah - you should spell it Ella to avoid confusion.

why would a name so short need a nickname?

If you are going to call her Ellie I would name her Gabriella or something a little longer. If you name her Elle, I would call her that. I like Ella also.

It just seems too short and incomplete to me - like there's something missing. My sister is Ellen and the family calls her El or Ellie. Other names for which Elle/Ellie can be a NN are Eleanor, Elaine/Elaina or Elizabeth.

Yeah, all of the concerns you voiced with Elle are concerns I have, too. I think it's so feminine and pretty, but might be lacking some umph b/c it's so short. But, I'm not crazy about Ellen, Elizabeth and Eleanor. Elena, maybe.

As far as the nickname being more syllabic than the original given name that's b/c Elle seems more "older" and Ellie seems more cutesy little girl-type. Like Gracie for Grace. Seems like little girls always incur nn's that end with the "ey" or "ie" sound...that's why the Ellie nickname. KWIM?

Well, thanks for your input, I'll have to ponder this one some more.

you could possible get Ellie out of Elise or Elyse also

the other way you can get "Ellie" is out of a name that ends in elle - like Danielle, Brielle, Gabrielle (although I'm not personally a fan of Gabrielle)

my favorite one there is Brielle, but I then would probably use the nickname Bree.

good luck though, you'll figure it all out in time
