New here with a name question

Hi everyone,

We're expecting our first child in August and would like some input on a name that we're considering for a boy. DH said it half jokingly a week or so ago, but now we're seriously considering it.

The name is Seiger, pronounced see-grrr, and is DH's maternal grandfather's name.

Anyone have an thoughts on that one?

We're not set on using family names but we want to use names that reflect our heritages - mine being Irish/Scottish and DH's being all Dutch/Friese (sp?).

Cheers and thanks for any thoughts you have!

Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear when people like it. I think we're fairly likely to use it so it's nice to hear that it's not too weird. Especially after about 50% of the August EC board people said it was 'strange'.

Thanks for the feed back.

I like it! Original, but not out there. Did you pick a middle name to go w/it?

Ha! The middle name is another area we might need some help... so far we can't come up with anything that would go.

The last name is Nyman if you have any suggestions.

I like it. It's unique, yet strong and traditional sounding.

At first glance, I thought it was a bit odd, but I think I like it. It's different without being too weird. Also, it doesn't look like it'd be too hard to pronounce correctly.

For the middle name, since this is from your husband's side of the family, maybe you could look to your side for a good name that fits with Seiger.

I LOVE using family names...I feel it gives a child such a wonderful instinctive connection to his or her own heritage. It is not bizzare, made-up, or weird -- it is distinctive, particularly with the familial background. I give it thumbs up.

Colleen,

Seiger is NMS, but I am really pro on family names :) It definatley is a unique name, and he won't be confused with any other Seiger's in his classes lol

I strongly encourage people to use family names, or at least find a namesake for the child. Neither me, nor my brother were named after anyone. We got our names because our parents liked them *rolleyes* Can't speak for my big bro, but I wish that I had a namesake.

Thanks to everyone for your responses! It's nice to hear that so many people are 'for' family names even though thats not the reason we landed on Sieger. The idea - along with the name - is starting to grow on me.

As for a middle name... I'm working on it! There aren't a lot of names on my side that appeal to me and most of them have been used frequently already. I might try my aunt who's into genealogy for some older names.

Cheers,
Colleen :)
