difficult last name to match?

My husband and I are pregnant with our first child...about 12 weeks...so we don't know yet if it's a boy or girl. We've just started discussing names with others, but because our last name can be somewhat comical if matched with the right first name (Payne) we haven't found too many seriously helpful suggestions. Everyone seems to come up with Max, Les, Bach, Ima, Lotta, Sporadic...things like that. While we chuckle, we're not getting any closer to deciding on anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

I'd suggest getting a few baby name books and looking for names you like first, then try them with your last name. Once you have some real options, your friends opinions will be more useful! I found it was best to get the name books from the library so you can get a few different ones without spending a fortune! Good Luck!

Wow, those are some helpful friends you have, huh? It wouldn't even think to joke like that, though I admit I sometimes take names a bit too seriously. I do find it hard to make suggestions without any criteria, though, not knowing what style you like. I think most names will work, though I'd probably avoid any that are also words, and I'd prefer something with 3 or 4 syllables with a 1 syllable last name, especially for girls. If you could think of a few names you like, even if they include names you can't use because of your last name, that would indicate the style of name you're looking for (classic/traditional, modern/trendy, etc.) and I'm sure people will have plenty of suggestions.

no one-syllable names with that (nicknames might be just 1, but not the formal name) - and be careful to test the nickname against Payne also - another also - avoid names with a long A in them.

Boys: Andrew (Andy), Christopher (Chris), Conner, Cameron (although unisex worries here), Derek, Eric, Ethan, Garrett, Gregory (Greg), Joshua (Josh), Jared, Jeffrey (Jeff), Kyler, Lucas, Matthew (Matt), Michael (Mike), Marcus (Mark), Nicholas (Nick), Skylar, Trevor, Tristan, Zachary (Zack)

Girls: Aubrey, Alyssa, Belinda, Courtney, Chelsea, Carina, Chloe, Erica, Heidi, Hilary, Jocelyn, Jillian, Johanna, Kara, Lindsey, Molly, Marissa, Mallory, Natalie, Natasha, Olivia, Sienna, Sabrina, Sierra, Samara, Sophia, Tiffany, Tonya, Tasha, Whitney, Zoe

good luck

I would suggest thinking about names that already have that last name. Go through a family tree and think about what sounds good with it. That way you could get an idea of what goes well and what kind of names you want to think about. It's a long process! You gotta narrow it down! Start with a broad idea and then when it's time you'll have the perfect name for your perfect baby! Good Luck and Congrats!
