The topic of popular dog names came up in another post and I thought I'd look around online and see if I could find a list. Sure enough, I found the top 20 for dogs. The website this came from isn't an official website (like the Social Security Administration) but it looked pretty well researched and it seems most of the data comes from the Department of Health, along with some pet insurance companies. So here you have it.

I was shocked to see Winston was #20---when I first saw your puppy named Winston, I thought it was the cutest and most unique name for a dog that I had heard in a long while.

We had a Molly and a Maggie at the same time years ago, by the time they became the "popular" girl dog names, our girls were in their teens already!!!

Now that I am married, our little girl is Trudie--never heard another dog with that name--and my folks now have a Millie. My sister has a cat, his name is Harvey (after the movie Harvey) and my brother's dog is Anna (she was a rescue dog and came with that name.)

I think its funny that there are "popular" dog names just like there are "popular" baby names!

I was shocked to see that Winston made the list too. Though I have to say that before I named him that, I have never met anyone else with a dog named Winston, and in the year since I've had him, I've met three others! What's funny to me is that most people assume he is named after Winston Churchill. (Some people have actually gotten confused and thought his name was Churchill.) I actually named him after the main character in George Orwell's book 1984. I like chosing pet names from literature or mythology. Had he been a girl, he would have been Athena. I also toyed with the idea of getting a cat, which I wanted to name Calliope after the muse. In general though I've always used people names for my pets. I had cats named Margaret (NOT Maggie, I would insist) and Sean and a bird named Conrad (after Conrad Birdie from the musical Bye Bye Birdie). For 4-H one year, my parents got us each a goat. My siblings named theirs Snowflake, Dancer and Starr. I named mine Samantha. ;-)

Cute list! Our cats are "Elrond" and "Lorien" - names from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (the books :)

However I always wanted a cat named Mullins. Right now I just have a stuffed cat named Mullins b/c we aren't getting a third. :)

There are some names on there that suprised me, others, like Jack, Duke and Sadie, that didn't. But I was a little suprised that Chloe wasn't on there. Seems to be a popular dog name around here.

Well, its funny how popular dog names mirror trends in human names. Several years ago at our family Christmas party, we had 3 Maggie's there--I have 2 cousins with little girls named Maggie--same age--and then the 3rd Maggie was our dog, who was several years older than the girls!

Yep, I know a dog named Jack, and had/have cats named Chloe and Sophie. I couldn't believe Annie was on there -- I've never met a pet named Annie. :-P
