Hi. I'm due in March, with a boy, & I've always loved the name Matthew. My dh really likes it too. Our last name is Rask, & of course we'd probably call him by the nn Matt. Is Matt Rask too rhymey? Please let me know what you think. Thank you in advance!

It doesn't sound rhymey to me at all, but it does sound a little abrupt and harsh, with two one-syllable names and the T and K endings. What I really thought when I said it out loud, though (and I apologise for this, but it's worth considering) is that it sounds a bit like the word mattress. Now, I often think people go a little too far when they criticize names for sounding like words, I remember a lot of people on a board once pointing out to a mom-to-be that Eilish (which I love) sounds like eyelash. On the other hand, I grew up with a girl named Sarah Anne... standard, normal names and a very common combination... and she was regularly called Saran Wrap. Luckily it was a friendly nickname and she didn't mind, but Mattress as a nickname probably has more teasing potential than Eyelash or Saran Wrap (at least until kids are old enough to have seen "Fried Green Tomatoes", and hopefully by then they're past the name-calling age!). Should this fact alone stop you from using a name you really, really love? I don't think so, after all most names can be contorted into something humiliating by a creative 8-year-old. I wouldn't agonize over it, but be prepared if you go with Matt Rask that it could come up some day. You could try sticking to Matthew, without a nickname, but recognize that chances are somebody, sometime will call him Matt, and it will be his choice what name to go by once he's in school. My only other suggestion is the Italian form of the name, Matteo, if you like that. It's reasonably but not excessively popular right now, not only in Italian families, and is less frequently shortened to Matt. If you really love Matthew, though, I'd stick with that, call him Matthew and hope others follow suit.

I think it sounds very nice. You could always just call him Matthew, my nephew is 19 and is still called Matthew by the entire family. I know somw of his closer friends call him Matt, but the majority call him Matthew. There is nothing wrong with Matt Rask though. Nice name!

Matthew is my fav boy name. Matthew Rask is awesome but Matt Rask is not! Do you have to use the nn? We also have a Matthew but he is never called Matt by us or anyone else. He's 7 1/2 & doesn't even know about the name "Matt".
