When you hear the name Lydia, can you describe the type of person that comes to mind (looks & personality characteristics)?

Thanks!

Lydia to me definitely has dark hair, and is very intelligent and feminine/girly, but she is grounded and is no pushover. This is our top name right now actually : )

It kind of feels the same as Susan to me. I imagine an average middle-aged woman who works in an office. She's chatty, outgoing and a probably a gossip. She's a bit overweight but not obese. She spends a lot of time on her appearance and she loves to buy shoes. She judges other people by what they wear and has a tendency to be catty.

I'm sure that's probably just me though, since the name is being given to infants with increasing frequency.

I imagine a serious, dark-haired girl with fair skin and large brown eyes. I think Lydia would be intelligent and self-confident. Not the sort of girl who would sit silently by--if she disagrees with you, you're going to hear about it. I think she'd be feminine, but not girly. I picture long hair and skirts worn just because she likes them (rather than for a special occasion), but a certain degree of toughness...in a "not afraid to walk alone" way.

I don't know if this makes any sense at all. Simply put, I have many positive images for this name. It's strong.

Betsychocolate--How ironic...MY name is Susan. Although I don't quite fit your description. But I thought that was pretty neat that you say Lydia reminds you of Susan (maybe it's a sign that I should go with this name :)

Thank you to everyone who responded. I've never met anyone named Lydia...I've only seen characters in movies and tv shows with that name. I picture a self confident and outgoing person as well. My husband and I both have blond hair and blue eyes so she probably won't have dark features. My concern was that Lydia sounded too serious and more of an adult name than a child. But I think we'll call her Liddy as a nickname while she's young. Thanks again! I think this will be the name we go with!

Sounds perfect for you, and it really is a beautiful choice. NN Liddy/Lydie is sweet as well. ;)

I love the name Lydia and think it is very elegant but didn't even open the post before I started singing...

"Lydia, Lydia, have you seen Lydia,
Lydia the tattooed lady."

I doubt too many kids around the playground are going to know that one but best to know it in advance.

Good luck!

I've known several Lydias (two a few years younger than in a small town high school and one very good college friend). I liked all three of them, but they were very different. I didn't comment earlier because I have a fairly neutral impression of the name. I think the name itself is very pretty; it's definitely on my long list. (Actually, having a close friend named Lydia is a con. I feel as though other, closer friends will be hurt that I "chose her name over theirs," or will expect me to name my next child after another friend.)

I'm really responding about the issue of the song 'Lydia the Tattooed Lady.' My friend Lydia rolled her eyes when someone mentioned it to her once, so she had obviously had heard it before (just as I heard a lot of "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms" comments when I was younger) but neither I nor practically any of the rest of her friends had heard the song until it was mentioned then (for reference, we were all born in the late 70s and are now in our late 20s). So, she may hear about the song from time to time, but I don't think it will be a huge problem or annoyance.

Obviously I'm from a younger generation, because my only real musical association with Lydia would have to be "Move it Like This" by K7.
