Hi all,

I came across these names for baby girls today and thought I'd pass them around. What do you think of them when you hear them? And what middle names do they sound good with?

Halyn (american: meaning unique and special)
Sada (japanese: meaning pure one)
Devin (gaelic: meaning fairy)
Hadley (english: meaning from hadda's field)
Avi (hebrew: meaning father)
Avery (english: meaning elf ruler)

Halyn (american: meaning unique and special) - my first thought is "Hailin' a cab." I'm not sure if that's how you'd intended to pronounce it, but no matter what I try it sounds like a word or phrase, rather than a name ... hailin', Holland, "hey, Lynn!" etc. You should also be warned that very few names -- short of some more recent trendy or ethnic creations, such as Nevaeh or DuShawn -- would ever be categorized as "American," so that pretty much ensures a made-up name with an equally made-up meaning (since that seems important to you). I could almost understand if it were something wonderfully unique, but there are so many similar names there seems little reason to use a created one, KWIM?

Sada (japanese: meaning pure one) - I'm not familiar with this either, so I can't comment on the spelling/origin/pronunciation/meaning, etc. If you ARE Japanese and this is a traditional Japanese name, by all means, it's a great way to honor your heritage!

Devin (gaelic: meaning fairy) - Devin is a beautiful name with many possible meanings -- fawn, poet, little dark one, gift, deep valley, etc. -- but "fairy" isn't one I've ever heard. If it's the name, and not just the meaning, that you find appealing, still a great option. ;)

Hadley (english: meaning from hadda's field) - love Hadley, though again, generally taken to mean "heather field"

Avi (hebrew: meaning father) - this would be a nice nn for Avigail, Aviva, Aveline, Averill, etc., but on it's own it seems it would be more suited to a little Jewish boy.

Avery (english: meaning elf ruler) - love it on a boy. To be fair, I don't dislike the name itself for a girl, but the collective usage is overwhelmingly trendy. So while I might find a girl Elliott or Finley more on the refreshing side, Avery, Riley, Madison, etc. just come across as following the herd. Not different or creative in the least, if you KWIM.

Besides those mentioned above, you may also like Hailey, Heilyn, Helen, Helena, Heulwen, Harper, Halle, Sara(h)/Sadie, Serafina, Devri or Ava.

Halyn ~ I think this is a cute twist on Haley/Halle/Hailie, etc. However when I say it, I can help think of "Hey Ellen". And I guess now that I think about it, it sounds very similar to Helen, which I don't like.

Sada (japanese: meaning pure one) - If the name is pronounced like SAY-dah then i think its absoulety adorable. Really, i love it. If it is prounced like SAD-ah then I dont really like it...so I guess it just depends!

Devin (gaelic: meaning fairy) - Devin to me is just blah. Kinda masculine I think. And boring.

Hadley (english: meaning from hadda's field) - this i dont like...just sounds made up and awkward. I guess I think it would be better on a boy than a girl..

Avi (hebrew: meaning father) - I think this is super cute! But i agree that it would make a better nn.

Avery (english: meaning elf ruler) - I hear this way too much. I guess I'm just bored with it.

I love Avery , but only on a girl. Avi could grow on me and Devin and Hadley are nice (although I wouldn't use them). Halyn and Sada are nms- seem madeup.

Sada- I took Japanese in highschool and the Japanese language doesn't have a Y sound. The name would be pronounced Sa-Dah..Which I don't like the sound of. My name being Kelly would be Kerii in Japanese. Although, not knowing it was Japanese I would pronounce it Say-da which I like.

Thanks for your opinions! They weren't all names I necessarily liked, but ones that I came across yesterday just going through my day. Hearing names and seeing them in print, if you KWIM.

Of all those names, I love Sada best pronounced Say-duh even though a previous poster said the Japanese language doesn't have a Y sound. I just love it and think it's so cute. DH really loves it too. It's not a common name, yet it's still very pretty. Plus, it reminds me of the name Vada but with a softer sound ... if you any of you remember, that name was from the movie My Girl...which is one of my absolutely favorite childhood movies :)
