The meaning of names

Just a thought that I needed to get out here...
Why is the meaning of a name so important? I don't know the meaning of any of my friends' names, nor have I ever thought about it. Why should one not use a name because it means something stupid? Just a little vent b/c I keep reading people's comments on names some of you have picked out. If you like the name, use it. Who cares what it means? That's simply my opinion. Tired of people telling me the name I chose has a stupid meaning, as if on the first day of school the teacher is going to call my child in roll call..."Cameron, meaning crooked nose". Please.

HA!!! I totally agree! Nobody ever asks you what your name means, it really doesn't matter..if you like a name for gosh sakes use it! It matters how it sounds not what it means...

It's not something I put a ton of thought into, but if a name has a meaning that I really love, it is a nice plus to the name, and vice versa. I think it makes kind of a cute story for the child about how they got their name, what it means, etc. I always like hearing about the story of how I got my name when I was a kid, and my parents would tell me meaning/origin and I liked that. Definitely not a HUGE deal though.

I agree with Nikki. A nice meaning is a plus, but it's not a necessity. The only time a negative meaning might be a concern for me would be if it was something obvious or possibly ironic or even comical. For example, Cecilia is related to the Latin word for blind, but I doubt that would be many's first thought on hearing the name (which is beautiful, regardless). ;) On the other hand, something like Hitler, Brooklyn or Chastity, which are immediately associated with the person or place or seems to be asking for teasing/irony WOULD be negatives for me, personally.

Those types of examples aside, a name's meaning is only important if it's important to the parents. For example, you might see someone post that they love the name Amelia, because it means "beautiful dreamer," Ewan, because it's the "Irish form of John, and John is a family name for me," or Jazzlynne, because it's "the Canadian spelling of my mn, Jocelyn." LOL Obviously, none of those are correct, so if someone posts something along those lines, where the meanings are obviously important to them, I should hope the ladies here would be nice enough to point that out, and give the correct meaning and origin if there is one (or point out that the name has none, if that's the case). ;)
