Lotus for a boy?????
| Thu, 05-17-2007 - 8:01am |
I just found out on Mother's day that I am pregnant for the third time. The baby naming bug has already bitten my husband and myself. If we have a girl we already know that she will be named Caris. (It's a combo of my mom Carolyn who passed away and his mom Doloris.) For a boy my husband suggested Lotus. We both like the name but also know that it is typically used for girls. And yes, we know it means flower. On the other hand it is also the name of a sports car. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? We already have a boy and a girl, Justin and Marley.

I won't do it.
What about:
Abbott
Asher
Skylar
Beckett
Thomas
Quentin
Good luck,
Brooke
I think I'd go with a different sports car...my husband suggests the Maclaren, since it's about as expensive. *wink* Really, the lotus flower image is just so much stronger and there will probably be lotus flowers longer than there will be Lotus cars...so I'd skip.
But Caris is GREAT!
What a wonderful Mother's Day present. Congratulations!
If your other kids were named Orion and Phoenix, I'd say go for it. With Justin and Marley, however, I think Lotus would be assumed to be a girl. Plus, to someone like me who knows nothing about cars, Lotus has an exclusively Eastern religion/Buddhist vibe to it that clashes with the more traditional Justin and Marley. I wouldn't use it.
Perhaps you'd like Lennox instead? I think Sawyer, Wyatt, Grant, Luke, and Dawson would also work.
I am usually one advocating for boys to be named great names even if it means that they're occasionally mistaken for a girl (personal beliefs about gender issues--why is okay for a girl to be mistaken for a boy, but not okay for a boy to be mistaken for a girl?), but I really think Lotus is a bad idea for a boy. I think he will be teased A LOT for that one, and I think he will be mistaken for a girl (on paper) something like 100% of the time. I'm actually a bit surprised that your dh likes this name--usually men are the ones saying "the other boys will tease him for that."
I thought the car name thing was fun though. I don't know if you want the car association particularly, or if you just thought the connection made the name Lotus more masculine, but I was intrigued so I looked up some car names and thought some of them might make cool names for kids, boys or girls. (Keep in mind that I know nothing about car brands, so some of these may be dorky or be the names of crappy lemon cars or snotty rich folk cars--and, some of them may be a little out there for kid names, depending on your tastes.) Enjoy!

I wouldn't use it for a boy or girl because of the car and the software by that name.
It also has a strong Eastern religious association, so I wouldn't use it unless it makes sense for you culturally.
AJ, enjoying life with C.
I love Caris -- so beautiful and the name obviously means so much to the both of you. Good choice!
Lotus, however, reminds me of the flower and computer program. I can't see it as a boy's name.
Besides the floral and Eastern religion associations already mentioned, many will also immediately associate this with the Lotus sexual position (basically the same as the Lotus Yoga position, with receiving partner on top). I remember a while back, someone mentioned this as a possible girl name, and a majority of the comments reflected this sexual reference, so I assume it's a fairly familiar one. Just something to keep in mind.
I also agree with some of the others that your other children's names definitely set the tone, so while I could see Lotus with sibs Phoenix and Orion, it seem quite out of place with Justin and Marley. To be quite honest, it seems a great deal more feminine than unisex Marley ... again, not that it will concern you, personally, but something else to consider.
Is it the sound you like? If so, perhaps something like Ludis, Lucas, Augustus, Quintus, Titus
