Is Anyone Like Me?

DH and I have a hard time thinking of girl names, but we have always liked Benjamin for a boy. We know that the name is our *IT* name (regardless of popularity ... we don't know anyone with the name Ben or anyone's sons named Ben) for our first boy. We are TTC now.

Is anyone else like me? Do you already have a name or names picked out before or during TTC? DH says sometimes he feels like he missed out on the "baby naming process" because we already found our IT name and are not even PG yet. But...I can't imagine my son (if that's what we wound up having) named anything different -- and neither can he.

Is it that big of a deal to name a child that is not conceived yet? Are we weird?

If we had a girl, she might still not have a name, but we both felt the same way about Benjamin, we had pretty much agreed on it as soon as we found out we were expecting. I am constantly going through and over my lists to find that perfect name again, still searching, and not pregnant yet. You can always mull over middle names.

There must be something about that name Benjamin! ;)

Glad to see there's someone else out there like me. It just seems like the perfect name for me and DH. And it's the ONLY name we feel the same about, boy or girl.

Dh and I had a very short list of names picked out, with the fn for a boy or girl pretty certain, even though we knew I had fertility problems and our likelihood of having a baby was pretty low.

We had our girl and boy names picked out for years before I became pregnant with Desmond. When I was pregnant with him, we did go through a couple of name lists and make a list, but none of them won over Desmond. So he still ended up with the name we had chosen long before the pregnancy.

We still love our girl's name as well and will possibly use it, if we don't have to use another name to honor one of my Grandparents (in my family (religious tradition) we only name after the dead and none of my Grandparents are dead yet, thank goodness. If they are not around when our next child comes though we'll have to look at names to honor them).

It was kind of odd to have the name long before pregnancy, but it definitely was the name for us and it fits him really well now he is here.

With our first dd, I happened to mention having loved Caitlin/Kaitlyn since I was, oh, about eight, and my dh loved it as well, so that was her name (the only point we differed on was spelling, and in the end he won LOL). We looked at a few others, but always came back to it (so much so that I actually don't recall the other girl names we considered at the time). ;)

Abigail was the only other strong contender for our second dd, Devanie, so I naturally assumed that would be our third dd's name, but when I mentioned that when we were expecting her, dh wasn't sure. Of course, after months of searching, making new lists and having them nixed repeatedly, we got it down to two ... one of which was Abigail. Guess what we named her? LOL So although we looked around, we still came back to the one name I assumed she'd be called from the start. Almost like she was Abigail all along.

I'm 99% sure I've found our baby's name (if this baby is a girl); and because we're adopting and the process takes a very long time, she almost certainly hasn't even been conceived yet.

I can't say 100%, though, because I don't know how to explain it, but sometimes I think a baby just doesn't look like this name or that name - - that a name might be great but somehow might not fit the baby. So there is a 1% chance that she might get one of the other 8 names on my short list. But at this point, those other 8 names, as much as I love them (and I really do love them!), take a back seat to "the name."

There's also a small chance that the baby will be a boy. I am nowhere near 99% sure of a boy's name - - not even 50% sure. For some reason, boys' names are more difficult for me.

Dh and I named our first son when we were still dating, barely even talking about marriage. My dad's name was John and my FIL is Richard so we decided to name our future son John Richard with the nn Jack. Jack is now almost 11 so he was named WAAAAAYYYYY before the huge increase in Jacks!

FWIW, I love the name Benjamin!

before we concieved our first we talked about names but never really had anything set in stone, we each had our favorites and we kept a list but we actually went with something that didn't make it on the list till after we concieved. We aren't even trying again yet but will be soon and we are already talking about names again!

I'm glad to hear there are other people out there like me! Because despite how much DH hates to talk about names, especially now right before we are TTC, he sure is solid with the boy's name we both agree on.

And a pp is right...as great as a name is, the name may not "fit" the baby. I knew someone who named their DS way before he was born (he was conceived at the time though) and when he was born it was like we all couldn't warm up to his name for a verrrry long time. Now, we can't picture calling him anything different, but when he was born he sure didn't look like the name they picked out for him!

That's the only thing I'm worried about with picking names so far in advance!
