I've known many people with mothers' maiden names as middle names, and I love that idea. I'm thinking of doing the same when I have kids, because I'm the end of the line as well.
I think Gilmore works great for a boy or a girl.

I love the idea of using your maiden name as a mn and think it honours your family and YOU so well. I think it could work for either gender for sure. I like it!
By the way, I noticed your follow me to adoption and have to ask- how is it coming along? Are you adopting internationally are from your country (not sure what country that is!) I am really interested in adoption and probably will adopt in several years.

I think it's a great idea. ;)
I wouldn't bother to give a second, "regular" mn in addition to Gilmore unless you have another compelling reason to do so. Simply the fact that it's a surname doesn't sway me. After all, Ryan, Brady, Hayden, Wallace, Cassidy and

I don't think Gilmore is bad. My maiden was Holcombe-that ain't happening! I think you could use Gilmore for a girl or boy. I had a friend who's entire name was Cynthia Cook Thomas. Cook was her mom's maiden name. Also, my grandmother's maiden name was Peppers, so my uncle's name is Kenneth Peppers Holcombe and he named his son Pepper.
Just some ideas. Hope it makes sense!
I think it is a matter of personal comfort and style. My aunt on my father's side gave her child (a son) from her first marriage 2 middle names, the second of which was her maiden name (also is my maiden name). When she had a child in her second marriage (a daughter), she also opted to use 2 middle names, again using her maiden name for the second middle name. Our surname is one of those that has become a fn for boys or girls. In practive, she usually only calls the children using their first name and first mn. However, her son (now in college) loved having four names read at his HS graduation. His younger half-sister likes it too b/c it gives her a chance to talk about our Irish heritage, as it is not evident in her surname.
I liked how my aunt was able to balance the practicality of the day to day while honoring our surname. Since I had seen this in practice for 19 years when we had our DD, and DH agreed, we used my ln as DD's second mn. It works for us b/c we don't use all 4 names that often (typically only when filling out forms at the doctor's office or the like).
If you think that it would not be an honor of your maiden name using it in this way (as a 2nd mn), I think it is perfectly acceptable as middle name for a child of either gender. John Fitzgerald Kennedy seemed to not be limited by his mother's maiden name as his mn.
