My grandmother's name is Mary and I want to name our next daughter after her with a middle name that she will use as well. However, I don't want anything that sounds too Catholic schoolgirl (no Mary Margaret or Mary Katherine), or too casual (e.g. Mary Kate or Mary Beth). Also, we really do not like trendy names. The baby is due on Christmas day. Does Mary Noelle sound silly- as in "Merry Christmas"? What about Marie Noelle?

We've also considered Maribel, but are worried about the overuse of all the Belle and Bella names. Any other suggestions?

I love the idea of using Mary after your grandmother. That is a nice way to honour her and Mary is a lovely, feminine, classy name that isn't overly popular now at all.

I do feel that Mary Noelle is a bit much when paired together because both names have a Christmas feel, not only because it could be thought of as "merry christmas" but also because Mary has the Christmas association with the Virgin Mary. I think it sounds a bit still together, to be honest. Marie Noelle still sounds as silly to me, but it has worse flow and doesn't honour your grandmother in the same way. I think I would just drop Noelle altogheter and search for something different.

I quite like Mirabel- very pretty and sweet. I honestly don't see the belle names being a huge trendy. Sure, Isabelle is popular, but I don't think that means that Mirabel has the same feel. I find it very refreshing actually.

Other combos I like...

Mary Beth or Mary Elizabeth nn Mary Beth

Mary Ann or Marianna/Mary Anna

Mary Sophia

I like both names, but it could be too much - that close to Christmas

How about:

Mary Christine

Maria Bethany

Mary Colette

Mary Camille

Mary Corinne

Mary Elizabeth

Mary Amelia - like this one

Marihelen, Maribeth, Marykate

Marielle Christine

Noelle Marie

Mary Joelle

or even

Nina Marie

Sorry, but to me it really does! I like either Mary OR Noelle separately, but not together. Your idea of Maribel sounds really nice. It's a more unusual "Belle" name.

You might also like:

Meredith

Or other veriosn of Mary:
Maura
Maire
Mara
Maria
Mariah
Marissa
Marian
Mariel (I like this because it sounds like Maribel a bit but without the -belle ending)
Mariam
Miriam
Moira
Molly

My immediate thought upon reading your title WAS "Merry Christmas." I absolutely love Mary, especially with its special meaning (it's my grandmother's name as well ), but I'd avoid pairing it with Noelle ... especially for a Christmas baby! ;)

I totally agree with you, however, that a less expected combo would be nice. Are there any other names you just love? After all, you've already honored a loved one with the fn, and you don't HAVE to use a run-of-the-mill, common mn, after all. There are so many others that would work.

For example:

  • Mary Cecilia
  • Mary Celeste
  • Mary Scarlett
  • Mary Gwendolen
  • Mary Gwyneth
  • Mary Genevieve
  • Mary Imogen
  • Mary Eloise
  • Mary Fiona
  • Mary Adelia
  • Mary Pearl
  • Mary Harper
  • Mary Avalon
  • Mary Enora

You get the idea. Perhaps something off your long list (if you have one ) would work as well?

I love double Mary names! My favorites:
Mary Claire
Mary Paige
Mary Allison/Alice

I also think that Maribel is beautiful. Oh...and I have to agree that Mary Noelle is to Christmasy.

Good luck!

Definitely too Christmasy. Another poster suggested Mary Christine and I think that sounds even MORE like Merry Christmas.

I honestly LOVE your idea of using Maribel. The belle/bel names may sound like they are popular, but depending where you live it may not be. I don't know one person who has named their daughter any "Belle" name around me ... plus, Maribel is definitely one of the less common options, yet a lot classier! It has meaning to you, plus it's an updated version.

Love it!!!!

Personally, I love Mary Noelle, and it's not too Christmasy for me, at all. But lots of people are going to see it as super-Christmasy, as the previous posts suggest. Marie Noelle will be seen the same way; plus, it doesn't really flow very well, and you lose the direct connection to Mary. I would go with:
Mary Elise,
Mary Lisette,
Mary Louise, or
Mary Elizabeth.

What a happy Christmas this will be!

I like your original idea of using your grandmother's actual name- Mary. Since that incorporates the special use of a family name, the door is wide open for a mn you simply love. A mn doesn't have to sound middle name-ish. I bet there are many names you like as first names that would be lovely paired with Mary.

Keep us posted!

Your responses have been SO helpful. I absolutely love Mary Colette, Mary Elise, and Mary Louisa, and I think they work beautifully as a double first name. We will still consider Maribel, and although we love Marisol, it doesn't really fit with out daughter's first name (Cecily) and we want consistency with theme.

We are still open for suggestions. Also, we haven't even considered boy's names. Any thoughts on a boy's name that works with Cecily and one of the Mary names above?

Sorry, meant to say any boys name that works with Cecily and/or one of the Mary names, just in case this is a boy and we still have a girl we can honor with our Mary name.
