| Sun, 06-03-2007 - 11:55pm |
I'm just curious what everyone else’s top 5 favorite boy/girl names list looks like.
Mine changes frequently, but right now it looks like this:

2.Declan
3.Rafferty
4.Silas
5.Taggert- dh HATES this one too
Girls:

5.Isadora
Dh was willing to play too, but not for the full top 5…
Boy:

2.Sabine
3.Delia
4.Tallula

I have a cousin named Callum! I think it's really cute, but I would never use it, because it feels too close to my own name, Colleen.
I'm not overly fond of Tallula (even though it's grown on me after seeing it so much on the board, lol), but I love Cordelia and Felicity. Eudora is beautiful, too!
Geek that I am, I am giddy over names that bring to mind literature or antiquity, so I really adore Atticus. To Kill A Mockingbird is a great novel, and every time I see/think of the name, I automatically envision Gregory Peck, lol. Definitely not a bad thing. ;-)
As for my Top 5...
Boys:
1. Iain Reilly. I've wanted the name Iain (that's iain) for a son for as long as I can remember. Before that, my number one boy name of choice was Caspian, and before that, I remember it was either Athos or Aramis, lol). Reilly is my mother's maiden name. Her parents had three daughters and no sons...gotta keep the family name alive somehow, eh?
2. Cedric Robin, or Robin Cedric. I have no idea why this appeals to me as much as it does, but I absolutely love it. I also think it is high time I heard "Robin" used for a boy, other than for Robin of Locksley.
3. Fergus Michael. Michael is a family name on both my mother's and my father's sides. Fergus, I just adore.
4. Tristan Arthur, or Arthur Tristan. Obvious references here, lol. Tristan & Isolde, and King Arthur. I also have a very good friend whose name is Arthur. He's like another brother to me, and I honestly don't know what I would do without his counsel sometimes. His opinion means the world to me.
5. Stuart Lysander. Stuart, for the Royal House of Scotland. As for Lysander...well, A Midsummer Night's Dream just happens to be one of my favourite plays of all time.
GIRLS:
1. Bronwyn Irene. I saw the -wyn spelling long before I every saw the -wen spelling of Bronwyn, so this is the one which really stuck for me. Irene is both my mother's mn, and her mother's mn. I asked why she didn't use Irene for me, and my mother said because she hated it when she was growing up, so it was tainted for her. I think it's precious, and would like to continue the mn tradition of it.
2. Sophia Marguerite. I LOVE the name Sophia, and it's also the name of the love interest in one of my favourite books, "Tom Jones" by Henry Fielding. Margaret is a family name on my mother's side, and there are many of its variations in the family tree. I'm part French on my father's side, so to reflect that as well, Marguerite ranks high when it comes to picking a variation I like.
3. Philippa Claire/Clare. Philippa is yet another name I absolutely adore. My father's Irish ancestors are originally from Co. Clare. I'm not sure if I would use the Claire or the Clare spelling, though.
4. Leonora Sinead or Ceridwen Eleanor. Eleanor was my favourite form of that name, but I recently read a book *romance novel* in which the leading lady's name was Leonora. Now I can't decide which of the two I prefer. As for Sinead and Ceridwen, I'm very into Celtic names, and these really stick out to me. Jane is such a sweet name, but I like the less common-sounding Sinead better. The "sh" beginning just gives it a softer feel, to me. Ceridwen might sound a little too "Lord of the Rings" for some, what with the -wen suffix, but I'm completely enamored of it.
5. Flora Maeve. My mother and I both love Flora, and I could never have a word against Maeve. :)
Ask me tomorrow, and these may have changed slightly, lol. Picking an order is extremely difficult.
Just 5 of each? Yikes. I'll see about paring it down and I won't use any of my kids' names :P.
GIRLS
1. Shanna
2. Vanessa
3. Elise
4. Julia (not going to use, even though I love it, because d-niece's name is Juliauna, nn Julie)
5. Selena
BOYS
1. Brett
2. Marcus
3. Jasper (I will never use this, but I've been liking it a lot anyway lol)
4. Anton or Anthony (but my brother is Anthony)
5. Archer
The only real contenders for girls are Shanna (because we've already agreed about it, but knowing dh, that *will* change @@), *maybe* Elise and maybe Selena. I'd love for Vanessa to be a top contender, but it was our agreed-on girl name for this last baby and he changed his flippin' mind 2 weeks before my due date! I wanted to smack him, since it was already his second girl-name change! Anyway. . . moving on ;). For boys, right now, Brett and Marcus are possibilities and the other ones are probably just semi-wishful thinking. I'll never use the name Anthony, but I might use Anton (depends on dh, which means probably not). I've been really liking Jasper lately, but it's way too close to ds3's name, which also starts with a J. Archer is one I've had on the list for a long time that will most likely never happen, either :P.
Thanks for the fun!
Amy :-) dw to Jerry; CPST and HS Mom to 4 great kids and hopefully more!
ohh- I love Genevieve. I have an aunt named Genevieve and have always wondered how she lucked out and got the good name when her sisters are all named....Mary-ellen, Mary-Elizabeth and Rosemary.
I also love Grady...it's our top contender for a nm. It'd be on the fn list, but it's too close to Griffin(ds) so I won't ever use it as a fn.
-Annie
Great list!
I love Iain- spelled this way! At one point I had this on my own list w/ this spelling too. Good to see someone else love it.
Reilly- LOVE. My ds is Griffin Riley. Riley was a family name for us too.
Fergus- I've tried to get my dh on board with this one-he's not there yet. It's such a great name!
And I adore all your girl names! I especially like... Bronwyn, Philippa, Sinead, Ceridwen and Maeve.
-Annie
Girls:
Fiona
Phoebe
Meredith
Chloe
Kira
Boys:
Andrew
Brady
Josiah
Kieran
Finn
I Love Elise. It's such a beautiful name. When I was pg w/ ds, that was our nm we'd picked for a girl.
Too bad about Julia being taken already. I never have it on my own lists, but when I see/hear someone else use it I always think how great the name sounds.
I feel the same about Jasper. It's a wonderful boy name that I probably won't use myself, but I love when other people do!
-Annie
What a great list!
It's so fun it see to see what other people love.
I especially like on your lists...
Phoebe, Chloe and Kira
Kieran and Finn.
I know my dh LOVES Phoebe- he didn't give it to me to put on his list, but I think he must have just forgotten.
Finn is my ds's nn- He's Griffin, but we call him Finn and Finny. He refers to himself as Finny.
-Annie
Here's my top five (at the moment):
Girls:
Annabel/Annabelle
Luciela/Luciana/Lucy (love 'em all!)
Annelise (can't use it though; last name starts with "S" and it runs together. Sad!)
Felicity
Avalon
Boys:
Benjamin
Avery
Dawson
Ethan
Alexander (but nn Alex -- last name starts with "S" and the name runs together! Grr)
I like your list. You and your DH have great taste, and how lucky you are that you have a little bit of overlap in your lists! Declan is a treasured favorite of mine that I wish I could use, but it sounds horrible with my last name.
My top 5 is currently in flux, since I revised my lists to take out any name ending in a/ah. The tentative top 5 of the moment are:
Amos
Calvin
Ezekiel
Leo <--- probably my favorite
Linus
Felicity (funny to see it on so many top 5 lists)
Jane
Lois
Miriam
Phoebe <----- probably my favorite
