Too nicknamey. I love Lainey (prefer this spelling) as a nn for Delaney, Elaine, Elena/Alaina or even Laine, but on its own I don't think it ages well and is a bit cutesy.

How is it pronounced? If it is pronounced "lah-nee" I really like it on its own. If it's pronounced "lane-ee" then I think it does sound nicknamey.

I really like the "lah-nee" pronunciation though AND the spelling. :)

If it is pronounced "lah-nee," my first impression -- with this spelling -- is a little more exotic than the Lonny/Lonnie and I really like it!

It's my MIL's first name (and she pronounces it Lonnie) so i think of her. We have been trying to use it as a mn to honor her, but it doesn't go with many names as a mn!

It strikes me as being either a nn, or possibly Polynesian in nature.

Lani is Hawai'ian for sky. It's a pretty name, but somehow it is a bit nicknamey for my taste. (I probably have no business saying that, though - - my #1 girl's name right now is Peri.) I like Leilani and Noelani very much, though, and I could see Lani as a nickname for either one.

I like it if it is pronounced as Lonnie. My husband and I are going to name our next child (if this one is a girl) Leilani. We'll probably end up calling her Lani though as to miss the Lei as a nickname.

We live on Kauai in Hawaii and while it is a popular Hawaiian name we don't know any children with it.

Our neice who lives on Maui is Katherine Noelani. She just graduated from high school last week and she is the youngest person we know with Noelani as a name.

Leilani means child from heaven and Noelani means heavenly mist. Leilani is both a beautiful name and has a very special meaning for us.

Hi Susan - I had to post because I can't believe you actually LIVE on Kauai, the most beautiful place on earth. My husband and I went there on vacation (from our cold and snowy Boston, Massachusetts home) and I never wanted to leave. You lucky duck!

As far as the name LANI: it initially made me think of Heidi Klum's daughter's name, which is Leni. And while Lani is cute, there might be pronounciation issues: is it "LAN-ee" or "LA-nee" or "LON-nee"? I actually think I prefer the full name Leilani, with the nickname Lani.

Good luck!

I really do like Leilani as a full name and Lani as the nn. That way, your daughter will have the full name if she wants to use it as she gets older and the pronunciation problems may not be as abundant.

Either way though, the name -- to me -- looks and sounds beautiful. It just has that "ring" to it that makes me say, "now, that's a pretty name!"

WDYT?

my first impression is that it's definitely open to mispronunciation

do you mean for it to be Lawn-ee or Lay-nee - because I can see that spelling - Lani - drawing either pronunciation

I like Laney, but better as a nickname for Delaney
