I made a list of all the baby names I liked for boys and girls and then went over it with my husband and made a list of the ones we both like. Now I want a name that is kinda unique not a name that is typical like Jen bob mike becky ect....I didnt like my name (darby) when I was younger but now that im an adult I get a TON of compliments on my name and I am happy I have it. My sisters name is jen and I know like 12 other jens so I just want something different. How do you know what is TOO different. Like we like the name oliver but some people are like eew if its a boy his middle name has to be john and so it cant start with a J or a D cause our last name is Davies and it just sounds too funny like my new name Darby Davies.....sounds to weird. How do you decide if you should just pick it even if other people dont like it. Here are the names we agree on.....anyone that will give me feed back THANKS!!

BOYS

Lincoln
Korbin
Everette
Wade
Trenton
simon
logan

Girls

Layla
willow
piper
Autumn
Paige
Olivia

I think the best advice I can give you is to take your time figuring out which of your list both of you like the most, you already have plenty of great choices. As for sharing names with everyone in your life, stop!, at least for now. The board is a great way to get opinions on names without the harshness of hearing it from people you are close to. After time and your list shrinks, I usually share with people but say, it will be either ____ or _____, that way they are less inclined to totally bad mouth your choice. You also do not have to share with anyone close to you until the baby is born, after he/she is here, they will love the name because the love the baby.

As for knowing if a name is too out there or TOO Different, I suggest you look at the popularity of each name to get a better idea of what people are actually using these days. I think you would be surprised at how popular some of your choices are, which means that they must not be too different, as a lot of people like them. For instance, you have a top 10, top 20, a top 50, a couple top 100, and mostly everything within the top 500.

A good place to start is the baby name wizard website, you will be able to see actual ranks of popularity as well as trends so you can see if a name is getting more popular or less popular and you can see how much it has been used in the past.

Feel free to share away here, its a lot easier here than it can be with your parents and friends!

Good luck, Jina

BOYS

Lincoln~~~Like it, not in love with it.
Korbin~~~Love it, but prefer Corbin. Other similar names Callum, Calvin
Everette~~Like it, also like Beckett
Wade~~~OK, not as good as the others
Trenton~~~ NMS
simon~~~I kdon't think this name fits in with what you are trying to achieve. Not a bad name, just not for this situation.
logan~~~OK, pretty common, see Simon

Girls

Layla~~~Love Layla, but it is becoming more popular by the child. I know a few. Odd side note, I know a Leila who's mom is dating a Darby (his full nameis Darwin)
willow~~~like it, but not my fave
piper~~~This is by far the best choice! I love it
Autumn~~OK
Paige~~~Ick
Olivia~~~ Not right for this situation.

Good Luck

BOYS

Lincoln- Stunning- so handsome
Korbin- LOVE Corbin... but the Korbin spelling looks trendy
Everette- This looks INCREDIBLY feminine... spell it properly- Everett. I love that, especially with the nn Rhett
Wade- Love it... strong with a classic country feel
Trenton- very trendy, doesn't even compare to the others
Simon- Love it
Logan- Like it a lot, even though it is getting popular for girls

I like your boy's list a lot, except for Trenton, but would definitely use the proper spellings of Corbin and Everett. I think my favourite overall is Lincoln and it is one that I hear the least.

Your girl's list doesn't compare to the boy's at all- there isn't a single one on there that really strikes me. A lot of them have a trendy feel which I don't like.

PP already gave great advice on choosing a name. So I wanted to put my two cents in there about your list!

I really love Oliver, but don't see it on your list. Did DH nix it?

Out of your list, I love Everett and Piper the best! :)

p.s. the baby name wizard is AWESOME. Love it.

I'm glad I could help!

I think the wizard will be a great help. Some of your current choices may be too popular for what you are looking for, or you may decide that it doesn't matter. Its fun to find names that are not too popular or too obscure.

The important thing is you are taking this seriously, as everyone should, but not everyone does. It helps to know what you are looking for, what you and DH can agree on, and how well the name will fit your child at each stage in her/his life.

Do you mind sharing when are you due? Are you going to find out the sex about of time, or keep it a secret?

I am not due for ahwhile (jan 7th) but I just know me and I know that it will take me awhile to pick a name and i want to have some that I can say alot and see if I get sick of it. My DH and I will try to find out when im far enough to do so. its just hard to choose because I want a name that isnt too generic but isnt too different that people will pick on the name.

Thinking far in advance is a great idea, I am not even trying to conceive yet (but hopefully very soon) and I have lists and spend most of my free time on here. There are lots of others on here just like me. Its important to be sure of the name you choose, but often times when you find "the name" you are sure. Its important to keeping looking and to not settle. I'm interested to see how your choices evolve, that's one of the most exciting things about this board!

well, if you look on the SSA list of top 1000 names you can find out where each one ranks. here's what I think of your list personally:

BOYS

Lincoln- (#300 in 2006) seems to be getting more popular but definately isnt a jen/bob; I think it's kinda cute.
Korbin- (#289 in 2006)prefer the Corbin spelling, I think it works well with your last name, it's kind of getting trendy but I still like it.
Everette- wouldn't spell it this way because it looks very feminine (like french names they add the 'ette' such as Odette and Nicolette) I do like Everett though, it's pretty different still (#451 in 2006)
Wade- this is just kinda a blah name to me, it seems boring and dated (popular in the 60's and 70's), sorry (rank was #551 in 2006)
Trenton- personally, I wouldn't name my kid this because im from NJ so I'm biased since it's such a dangerous city (#192 in 2006)
Simon- I think it's cute, alittle more popular than your other choices though (#246 in 2006)
Logan- I really like this name, it's really popular right now though so if you want something different I wouldn't pick this (#19 in 2006)

Girls

Layla- it's alright, not my style personally at least not spelt that way. I just thinking a name starting 'Lay-" would get teased alot, maybe its just me though! (I like it spelt Laila alot better! #100 in 2006)
Willow- it's alright, reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, can be kinda cute though (#529 in 2006)
Piper- it's cute, kind of trendy in my opinion though, has potential to sound dated (#246 in 2006)
Autumn- this is my favorite of your girls list, really cute, some what popular (#95 in 2006)
Paige- it's alright, not my favorite though and it's more popular (#76 in 2006)
Olivia- cute but very very popular (#7 in 2006)
