I agree that it's a great name and it was originally for boys.

Historically, I like it and I find unisex names to be more interesting on boys...but I think Ashley has slid past unisex and solidly into the girls' camp for the time being. Also, the sharing of the beginning AND ending with Avery would be a little too cutesy for me. I think Ashton, Asher, or simply Ash would be a safer bet.

Ashley originally was a boy's name.. and many names are as well such as: Morgan, Shannon, Kelly, Stacy, Tracy, and there are many others.

I think you might run into problems with the name Ashley for a boy. It is so associated with girls now. I think it has gone the way of other girls names that started out as boys names like Courtney and Beverly.

The only male Ashley I have heard of lately was that kid from the boy band O-Town, Ashley Parker Angel. And the other thing that comes to my mind when I think of a male Ashley is Ashley Wilkes from Gone With the Wind - not exactly the best example of masculinity if I am remembering correctly from the movie. I never understood why both Scarlett and Melanie even wanted him. ; )

If you really like the nickname Ash, why not go with Ashton?

Makes me think Gone with the Wind, so I like it for that reason. There are SO many girl Ashleys (especially from the early 90s), though, that it might make me hesitate to use it.

Ashley has been so extremely popular for girls for so long ... although I like it OK in theory for a boy, I personally would not use it for a son. I guess to get Ash, I'd go with Ashton.
