I never understood why parents would take the time to pick the perfect name, especially the first name, but then call their child by the middle name. It's confusing. If you love Graeme, go with Graeme for the first name! :)
Thank you, Elena (el
Often the reason has to do with someone else close to the family having the same first name, but the baby's name sounding better with the already-used first name at the "front". That's the case for both my dad and my husband: DH is "William Neil" but goes by Neil since he had an Uncle Bill. My dad is Marvin Earl, with the Marvin being after his dad so they called him Earl. Marvin Earl sounds better than Earl Marvin and William Neil sounds better than Neil William.
But I'm with you, if that reason ISN'T there (I guess there could be a few other valid ones), then name the baby what you are going to call it. I've *always* disliked nicknames and had five children who all go by their NAMES (no nicknames). But ...... *THEN* I got pregnant with number six and fell in love with the name Ike. Dh liked it a lot too -- and neither of us was comfortable naming him just Ike, so we went with Isaac, lol (which seems like a really odd name now because we never, ever call him Isaac and never, ever hear it in relation to him except when around friends who apparently think "Ike" is too adultish for a little boy so they call him Isaac even though they know we don't ever do so).
That said, to the OP I would say: Yes, call him Elliott if you're going to name him Elliott. Graeme Elliott is nice if you plan to call him Graeme.
