I voted for Franchesca, but I very much prefer the traditional Francesca spelling. It's a lovely name, and I think it would be nice for a daughter to stand out from all of those Bs.

I agree that Francesca should be spelled this way - very nice contrast to the B's. :)

AJ, enjoying life with C.

I can't stand "Bayli" (Bailey is better, but still not great, but I LOVE Francesca. I am not sure why you spelt it wrong. The name is spelt Francesca, and seeing Franchesca doesn't make the name easier to pronounce, just makes it look like the parent (you) doesn't know how to spell.

Nikki,

I think some of your comments are very rude.

I love Francesca with the original spelling and would still prefer Franchesca over Bayli (I have to admit, Bayli O'Shea sounds vaguely like a drink you'd order around St. Patrick's Day.)

I think there's nothing wrong about correcting spellings...I agree it could be done more graciously, but it's possible that the person presenting a name has perhaps only heard a name and doesn't know what the standard spelling is, or hasn't considered what an altered spelling might look like to others. The idea of putting names forth for opinions is that others give their opinions--as you have given yours.

And, for future reference, courtesy of Merriam Webster:

spelt
Pronunciation:
\ˈspelt\
chiefly British past and past participle of spell

We don't use it over here, but it shows up in a lot of Brit lit.

Just because it is in the dictionary doesn't make it correct grammer, and no one should feel the need to correct spellings. 95% of people on this board know how to spell a name especially if they plan on using it. If they have spelled it differently it is obviously for a reason and should be commented on not corrected.

for example I plan on using Ashdon if this baby is

You can feel free to ignore my comments if you want. I have been told several times that people appreciate my honesty. If I think a name looks ridiculous (like the ones you listed) I am going to tell you. A lot of people appreciate an honest opinion so they know what people *really* think when they smile and nod and say they like your child's name.

Feel free to skip past my comments if you think they are too harsh for you!

And ??? about "spelt".... Maybe it is different in Canada, but we use it all the time (?) Not that that really has anything to do with your post. Spelling a name wrong that your child is going to have for the rest of his/her life is something that should mentioned, JMHO.

Actually, the dictionary isn't about grammar--it's about the existence, spelling and meaning of a word. You said "spelt" isn't a word...it is, and she did use it properly, if a bit obscurely on this side of the ocean. (Sorry...I'm a word junkie who actually reads books where people talk about how things are "spelt." (And I'm assuming that Jane Austen knew what she was writing about.) On the side, spelt is also a grain. Spelt that way.)

And there have actually been several occurrences on both naming boards where people people have been unaware of a name's correct spelling until corrected. Like I said, it could--and should--be done more gently, but it doesn't mean it can't be mentioned. Like you said--if an opinion is asked for, it also has to be assumed that it might not correspond with your own. Otherwise, why waste the time asking?
