Weird or pretty?

We're thinking about naming our first daughter Windham (pronounced "windum"). We both think it's beautiful, but I'm afraid she'll spend her life spelling it out or getting puzzled looks. What do you think? Do you like it or not?

We're also considering Susanna Windham. How do you like that?

Definitely do Susanna Windham! I admit, I find Windham just plain strange... and a tad masculine (surnamey). With Susanna Windham, you can incorporate it, will still giving her an option that won't get the puzzled looks.

Windham wouldn't work for me for a few reasons. First, I think that she would definitely spend a lot of time spelling it for people and getting puzzled looks. Second, I predict that she would be nicknamed Windy when she gets to school (i.e., too old for you to control what kids call her), whether she likes it or not, which to me is not appealing. Third, I am just personally pretty tired of the surnames trend, and this sounds like another surname to me, lost in the crowd to some extent. Susanna Windham, however, is lovely, and I seldom hear Susanna, so it has a kind of fresh sound to my ear. Anyway, just my two cents

I'd go with Susanna Windham. We have friends who named their daughter Wyndham and, even in our crowd of Asas, Penns and Chaunceys, that one still leaves us confused. The source has never been cleared up, so the popular opinion is that she was conceived in a Wyndham hotel...

So, maybe you can clear it up--where did you find it?

i think it's kind of odd for a first name and agree with another poster that it sounds masculine, I think it works nice as a middle name though.. Susanna Windham sounds nice.

There is a hotel chain named Wyndham, pronounced "windum".

I think it is very very pretty! But you simply give your daughter more options if you use it as a middle name. Susanna Windham, or my spelling preference, Susannah Windham, is beautiful.

She can always be Windham to close friends and family.

Good luck!
