Those were all dh's and my first thoughts, too!! LOL. But then we got past those associations and our "fourth thought" (that it's a unique name with a long history, and a great meaning) really caused the name to grow on us. It's ethnicity (German) cinched the deal since dh's family is German. Oh, and dh *loves* how it goes with our now-second youngest son's name (Ike). Ike and Axel. Our pastor at church said they sound like they're going to start a Christian biker gang someday, tee-hee.
Anyway, I know the name's not for everyone -- I don't expect everyone to jump on the Axel bandwagon -- but it does fit our little guy well.

I'm so glad you are both so happy with the name, it can be so difficult to agree.
