Hi, new and need some naming advice!

I'm expecting #1, and no definite decisions on names. I'm only 6 weeks, so I have plenty of time but I am so indecisive right now! Since bf is from a family of three boys, I'm guessing chances are I'll have a boy, but his brother does have one girl. Boy names are so much harder than girls, though, so I'm just posting on boy names now!

My mom likes really traditional names like John, James, etc., so she's not liking any of the names I like, which are not popular and trendy but not so unheard of. And my bf has only given an okay on two names for boys I like: Ciaran and Augustin. His favorite that he suggested was Dexter...I said NO to that!

But Ciaran, which is the spelling I like, could confuse some people as far as pronunciation, don't you think? If I use this name, I only want to use this spelling. Another problem is that it's been used for girls, which for the most part I want to avoid.

August is my great-great grandfather's name. Do you prefer August or Augustin? My mom doesn't like this one at all and thinks it's weird.

Another name I really like is Liam, but bf knows a couple with a son named this and that's why he doesn't like it...but I'm still holding out that he'll change his mind.

It may help to know the last name will start with an R, be two syllables and end in an "ick"

Thanks!

I agree that you need to leave your mom's opinion out of the equation. It's nice if she likes the name, but she already got to name her kids. It's your turn now. And she will love the baby no matter the name.

Ciaran is not really my style, so I don't feel I can comment on it.

I think Augustin is a fine, strong name. My husband and I have the name Augustus on our boy list and we had some disputes over Augustus vs August. I like August much better, but he feels strongly about Augustus (both names are family names for us). We finally decided that we could use Augustus as the proper name, but call him August. Something similar might work for you if you're concerned about Augustin vs August.

I also like the name Liam quite a lot. However if your partner is set against it, you may have to just let it go. With my second son I loved the name Duncan, but my husband dragged his feet about it through the whole pregnancy. Finally a week before he was born my husband told me he just did not want to use the name. It would have been much easier on me to have given it up sooner and concentrated more on names we both really agreed on. Just my opinion.

Good luck. It's fun and sometimes difficult to find the perfect name for your perfect baby.

Ciaran is predominately male, so I wouldn't worry about the "been used on girls" part. EVERYTHING has been. (Seriously...I know a baby girl named Randall.) As far as the pronunciation, you (and he) will likely have to explain it to people, but that can go for almost any name, too. (Seriously...my name is Kristen. I don't think my grandma got it right on a birthday card until I was 10.) And you could use Declan with the nn of Dex to appease your bf on a future son and stay in the same vein.

As far as August/Augustine, I prefer August. I find Augustine a bit fussy. Though Ciaran Augustine has this great historical figure vibe...
