Does anyone else wonder why some people like uncommon names and where they get them from? I mean I am not saying its wrong at all, I myself like some of the weird names. But whats wrong with the older and more heard of names? Just wondering. Not trying to pick or put anyone down for that matter.

I am unsure myself and wonder why some people pick the names they do.

Well, I kind of think of uncommon names in different categories, so I'm not sure which you're referring to. There are the uncommon but established "normal" names (like Gwyneth) and then there are the uncommon and very strange or made up names.

I personally like names that are older and established but less commonly used, such as Gwyneth, Helena, Corinne, etc. I wouldn't use super popular names for my own child b/c I feel like some names are sooo overused and I'd like to avoid my child being 1 of 3 kids in a class w/ the same name. It's just a personal preference!

I always try to think of baby names as part of personal taste. If you think about it, some people prefer very traditional/ classic clothing while others like very trendy clothes. Some people search and find the weirdest clothes they can. It's the same with names, IMO!

In our case, we're using uncommon names because we have the fifth most common surname in the US. My husband routinely gets calls for other people with his first name (which has been in the top 10 for the last 130 years.) My BIL routinely gets other people's angry creditors, even though his name is only in the top 50. Names are meant to serve to delineate "this is this person, this is that person." With our surname, you have to look outside the commonly-heard to do that.

Besides, finding a lesser-heard name that isn't silly is a great challenge. I COULD use the same-old, same-old, but where's the fun in that? I'd rather look in my theatrical programs, old books, history texts or family tree and find something that's meaningful to us. Just because it never became popular or has fallen out of favor doesn't mean that it should go on being neglected. There are some really beautiful names--full of history and substance--that have gotten overlooked. I really enjoy finding them.

It really depends on what you mean by "uncommon."
