How do YOU say "Mariel?"

  • MARY - el (emphasis on 1st syllable)
  • Mary- ELLE (strong ELLE sound to finish)
  • Mary-ill (equal emphasis and "ill" ending)
  • another way
  • don't sweat the differences, they are not significant.

I voted "don't sweat the differences..." But for the record, in my neck of New England it's sort of like Ariel, with an M sound in front, if that makes any sense..and it's kind of slurred together so it's not really 2 syllables. But most people will remember Mariel Hemmingway and get it right anyway :)

It's a gorgeous name, any way it's said!

My niece is named Mariel and we all say Mary-ELLE, but I think it is beautiful however it's pronounced-a great name!

Well, I do equal emphasis with more of an "ul" at the end, than "el".

I would pronounce it Marry IL. It reminds me of Muriel's wedding (great movie)...Muriel changed her name to Mariel. Lexi

I say it MAA-ri-ehl. Emphasis on the 1st syllable, but the "a" as a short "a" sound, not a long "a", the way Mary has a long "a".

Hmm, that's a better way of explaining how I pronounce it--I just put the emphasis on the 1st syllable. MARRY-ill.
