softer and feminine sounding)

I'm assuming you mean tear, like "tearing a piece of paper" and not "crying a tear". That's what I voted for. To me, Tah-ra actually sounds more harsh. I guess it's all about perspective. The one thing I've realized on this board is the wide range of pronounciations, depending on where you live.

Yes, TEAR-A as in TEARING a piece of paper, not TEAR as in crying tears. SORRY - oops.

We don't say either. My sister is Tara and the first 'a' is like 'apple'. That's the way any Irish person will say it for you;

Juli, you're going to get both pronunciations. don't worry about it. it's not that different, it's just sort of a regional thing, sort of a family thing, where some families pronounce short As one way, others another.

don't let that sway you from naming her that, it's a really pretty name.

Aislinn,

Yes thats what I meant Tara pronounced like a as in apple. I guess my poll is a little confusing.

I say Tah-ra. When you put down TEAR-a, you mean "tear" as in, "don't tear my dress!", not, "I have a tear in my eye", right?

I think Tare-a just sounds ugly.

Best of luck@!

I pronounce it Tar-a (does that make sense?)

Then again, I also pronounce Sara, Mara, Cara, Lara, Dara etc the same way, but that might be a British thing.

Ahhh...I think it's a gorgeous name pronounced like that! We always hear Tare-ah or Tawr-ah, so I just figured those were the pronunciations you were asking about, LOL! That's what I get for assuming;) People will catch on if they don't get it right the first time (although, funny enough, my sister Tara had a harder time getting people to say
