I am only 10weeks pregnant but my 3year old keeps call "his baby" Luca, I said "are you having a baby brother" and he said "no, a sister, Luca"

So it was very bizzarre to see your post,, We never mentioned the name Luca to him.

Well that's strange isn't it! How odd for your 3 year old to come up with the name Luca as a girl. My DH likes the name (he wants something Italian sounding to go with our last name) but I am a little unsure. Thanks for your post, at least my DH has a 3 year old on his side! :)

Although the name Luca ends in an "a", I strongly believe it is a male name. I don't particularly care for it.

Best of luck to you.

I really like the name Luca for a girl and in fact dislike it for a boy. I remember Jennie Garth from 90210 had a daugher named Luca Bella. Her husband was Italian.

Luca is a boys' name. How about Lucy/Lucinda/Lucille/Lucia for your daughter?

Luca, in Italian, is a boy's name.. in Hungarian, it's a girl's name.. go figure!

got this from behindthename.com

LUCA (1) m Italian

Italian form of LUKE. This name was borne by Luca della Robbia, a Renaissance sculptor from Florence.

LUCA (2) f Hungarian

Hungarian feminine form of LUCIUS

There are so many gorgeous Italian girl's names out there, I wonder what it is about Luca that has your DH stuck on it? The sound of Luca is rather masculine to American ears, and almost everyone has the Suzanne Vega song "My name is Luca" as a reference.. the song, in which a little BOY named Luca, is physically abused..

Anyhow.. here are some pretty Italian alternatives..

I know it's a little different, but how about Lucia?

I stand corrected! It's interesting how the same name can be used for girls and boys in different languages (or even different countries with the same language - Robin and Leslie in the US/UK spring to mind). :)

Happystars,

I agree wholeheartedly.. names & the history of them is tons of fun! I've always been fascinated by names.. where they come from, why they're invented (not all of them are celebratory), how they get used for who & where, how they travel and change. It's really awesome to follow a name back.

If you're interested in playing with onomastics (the history of names) try going to www.behindthename.com there's a whole bbs for "where did this name come from" sort of questions as well as the best collected database of names and their origns (which is where I found the Luca references.. then double checked them with a few Russo/Hungarian relatives.)

I don't mean to hijack this thread.. just had to comment. LOL

As for Luca, for a girl.. it's not unheard of per se..but rare. since Suzanne Vega's song, however, I'd settle in for a few years of explaining "she's a girl" since most people automatically think boy. It would also help if little Luca's dark haired/darker skinned than average.. since if she looks Swedish.. noone's ever going to believe "she's" Luca at first. :) For me, Luca'd have to be an 'I need to see her first' sort of name.. and I'd have a backup or two, just in case!

Just my thoughts..

Devin
