I'm a firm believer in formal names on the birth certificate, nn's for daily use. I think a person spends far more time overall as an adult than they do as a child and it's nice to have something that sounds grown up when you are grown up!

It depends, I guess.

In your case, I voted Margaret.

I couldnt vote because I like both!! I have a friend who named her baby Maggie Lorraine. And it seems perfectly fine. Good luck!

I agree with Ali. I couldn't vote either. I went to school with a girl named Maggie (not short for anything) and I never thought her name should have been Margaret. She was definitely not a Margaret. On the other hand I know a Margaret who could not be a Maggie. They say that a name shapes the personality and identity of a child; so I say if you want a daughter who embodies what you think a Margaret is then give her that name but if you want a daughter with the attitude/personality of a Maggie then name her that.

I definately think there should be a formal name on the birth certificate. NN's are not appropriate in every setting and the child should have a formal name to grow into as an adult. If the President's full name was Joey for example, it would not be as respectful to his position. Dr. Joey Smith? The Honorable Ali Jones?

I personally think if you are going to call her Maggie then name her Maggie. I don't like nicknames. But that's just me! LOL. That goes for any name.

If you name them with a formal name, then you have the option to use both names!

I am very strange in that I do NOT like nn's. I feel that you should name your child what you want to call them, afterall that is the purpose of a name isn't it?
