I've long loved Jack but also love Ike. Jack is supposedly more popular/trendy, but I've rarely met a little boy named Jack. I've never met an "Ike" little boy. DH likes Isaac, but I don't -- would want to do just Ike if I could. What do you think? They both go well with our last name.

I think Ike is cool. There are such a glut of Jacks under 5 around here that even as much as I love the name, I am so tired of it. It seems every other baby boy I know is names Jack or Sam. Ike would be a refreshing change of pace.

"Hit me again, Ike, and put another steak on it!" ---I'm sorry, all I can think of is Ike Turner, and that is BAD! I must say I prefer Jack.

I love both, but Jack is way too common right now.

Jack is pretty popular, but I just LOVE it. And I just don't like Ike at all. Sorry. My vote is for Jack even though it's popular.

Jack can get away with standing alone (ie - not a nn for Jackson, John etc)

Ike cannot - it needs to be a nickname for Isaac or Dwight

Ike was a nickname for Eisenhower, not for Dwight.

I hate the name Jack. Perhaps the slang around the rest of the country is different, but around here, you're dooming your boys to be walking masturbation jokes for the rest of their school careers. And beyond.

Ike is good by itself, but slightly better when it comes from Isaac. I wouldn't avoid using it alone, though, if you really prefer it that way. It'll be about as confusing as if you named him Nick. Everyone will presume it's short for something, but it'll be very easy to explain that it isn't. And it'll look just fine on official correspondence.

I am quite surprised by how one-sided the vote result is! :)

To me, there's not much difference in sound and "feel" between Jack and Ike.

Side note: Did you know that Eisenhower's mother named him Dwight in part because it was a nickname-less name? (She didn't want his name to be shortened into a nickname). Lol...

While I really like Jack, and don't know a one myself (and wouldn't be worried about the bad connotation thing), it's looking like we'll still go with Isaac (calling him Ike from day one). He'll be the only one of our kids with an official nickname, which I don't love the idea of -- but there are worse things in the world, no?

I do like Ike as a stand alone name and I agree with the last message where Kate said you just correct people when they try the longer form (we have a son named Will that people tried to call William for awhile -- or Willy -- but we'd say "Nope, it's just Will" and that eventually stopped). All the same, my husband prefers Isaac and it *is* easier to match a middle name with Isaac than it is with Ike. (We turned finding a MN for Ike into a fun game one night -- Ike Rye , Ike Iss , Ike Lean , etc).

We're probably looking at Isaac Noble, Isaac West, or Isaac Rudolph (dh's dad's name).

I DO appreciate all the feedback!

I know you already responded with a decision, but I wanted to add my thoughts anyway. I simply couldn't vote b/c I couldn't decide! I have loved Jack for a long time. If DD#1 (or DD#2 for that matter ;-) ) had been a boy, he would have been named John after my grandfather, but we would have called him Jack. DH and I both just really liked it despite its popularity.

However, once I saw Ike in a poll on here (forget how long ago), it's been really growing on me. I *love* the name Isaac as well (although DH doesn't :-P), and I think Ike is a perfect nn. I also really like the name Isaiah and would love to use Ike as a nn there as well.

Good luck with your new little one -- you couldn't have gone wrong either way! :-)
