I love Marley. It is so unique and "cool"- it has the same feel that Ryland does. Coral seems kind of juvenile to me and Emerson is nice, but trendy.

I love, love, love, Marley. I would consider it for my second, but I have a neice named Mollie, so the sound is just too close for me. It is a nice name, and goes great with Ryland! Good luck!

I really like Coral (like Cora even better) but feel that it is an odd match with Ryland. Marley matches really really well, IMO. Great choice.

Steph,

I gather you did not care for this poster's name choices.

I think Ryland and Marley the best combination.

For what it's worth, I like the name Marley and I think it would be very cute on a little girl. I don't associate the name with a dog or a ghost from a Christmas movie. :) I did vote for Coral Ann, though, but Marley would have been my 2nd choice. Good luck to you!

I could see the name Marley on an infant, little girl, teenager, young adult, mom, teacher, supermodel, CEO of a company. I think it's a nice name, not my favourite, but still nice and I don't have any bad associations with the name at all. I heard this a few weeks ago on a little girl at my son's soccer game on the other team. She'd be 4 or 5. I think it would age very well.

As for Francesca, I'm not a fan of this name. I don't mind the nn (was it Chesca?), though. As for the other nn's, they definitely wouldn't do anything for me. But if you love Francesca and want to nickname her Chesca then name her that. Everyone will catch on to what you're naming her. Nobody should be calling her the nn they think it should be, anyhow. You may have to correct but you'd think only once. I would never start calling someone by a different nn than what was used. I would call her by whatever the parents called her. I'm not one for nn's so I tend to stick with the formal name given especially if I don't know the person that well. I find nn's are more of a personal thing and only people who are close to that person should be calling her by that name. But that's just me. :)

It is because of a strong desire and deep appreciation for the naming process that a parent comes here seeking name advice. Therefore, to accept and respect the differences in our naming style preferences should be top priority in responding to these posts.
In fact, I'm positively grateful all expectant parents don't share the same tastes in baby names. I, like Ryland's mom, was seeking obscurity. My children, now 8 1/2 and 10 1/2, have experienced any number of reactions to their names. The good has made them proud and the bad has made them stronger. Mostly, they appreciate the care we took in seeking out what we believed to be their perfect names.

If you will notice, the title of this thread is "Name Ryland's Sister" --- It is not---
Do you like this name? What do you think of this name?

Chances are, Ryland's sister will be named Marley, Coral or Emerson. My opinion of any of these names, or yours, is unimportant. The world will keep turning whether she names her daughter Marley or Mary. Does that mean EVERYONE will react positively to either name? Absolutely not. Does it matter? Not much. I think it's the thrill, anticipation, and challenge of finding the "right" name that is significant to mom. After baby comes, baby will simply become whoever she is...

To offer helpful information would be a nicer form of contributing to this particular post.

Here's an example for you-

SAMPLE POST TOPIC- Which name for Ryland's sister- Marley, Coral, Emerson or Kaitlin?

Marley- A pet form of Marlene which began to be used as an independent name in the 1930s. Looked upon favorably today without widespread popularity- Its rank last year was #467- The parents of 642 baby girls last year found it appealing enough to christen their daughter's with for life.

Coral- A rare gem that fits in quite nicely with the "noun names" that are popular today. This one has roots. It's been in recorded use since 1880 and was particularly favored in Britain for several decades. It reached Top 1000 status in the US in 1991 and 1992.

Emerson- This surname originated in the 13th century and has received sporadic usage as a fn for boys ever since, esp. immediately after the fame of Ralph Waldo Emerson. In recent decades, it has not been in wide usage for boys and seems to be settling squarely on the female side- It has ranked in the Top 1000 for little girls for 5 years now, ranking #442 last year. The parents of 902 little girls deemed it fitting for their daughters. Two things to consider- It more than DOUBLED in usage last year, and it is the most widely- used of your name considerations. It will continue to grow. If obscurity is one of your goals, one of your other choices would be better. Since Ryland has a surname, people may be likely to assume Emerson is another boy. Be prepared to correct this until her name "catches" on.

Kaitlin- The good news is that it has widespread appeal. Unfortunately, with that status comes the following statistics for 2005 ALONE-

Katherine 6276 (no. of children given this name)
Catherine 2928
Kathryn 2522
Kate 2363
Katie 3100
Kaitlyn 6276
Katelyn 1090
Kaitlin 993
Cadence 1655
Caitlyn 1871
Kaydence 860
Kaitlynn 639
Kadence 893
Katelynn 1090
Kaylee 5779
Kayla 8438
Kailey 1282
Kaley 504
PLUS Carly/Kylie and their many spellings plus Makayla, Kathleen and Casey all in the Top 300.

A daughter named Marley, Coral or Emerson will, no doubt, be surrounded, in her adult world, by Katie, Katherine and Kaitlin. I would endorse one of the first three choices as the most refreshing of the choices, IMO. However, you should name your daughter the name you love best. Any of them is an appropriate choice, given the aforementioned statistics, for a baby girl.

Respectfully, Ginger

To Ryland's mom- Emerson is my least favorite choice because it ends in n- like the mn you've selected Ann. One of the "rules of thumb" of baby naming is not to end fn and mn with the same sound. Of course, rules are made to be broken. If Emerson is your fave, go for it. Marley is a catchy match to Ryland, imo, and Coral is elegant. Good luck, Ginger

For Ryland's mom.

My favorite choice is Emerson.
