I love it. If I were you, I'd use it as his first name and call him Ried/Reed.

Thanks to everyone for their votes and comments: That's what I thought about the Sound of Music making it well-known. DF was unconvinced, though, thus the creation of this poll : )
I do like the suggestion of nn Reed, too--that was also on our long list also! However, even though Friedrich is a family name for me, do you think it's a little much for a first name in an American family (with a Spanish-sounding surname)? The child would be about 1/2 German, but actual German people are pretty far back in the family tree.

I agree, I am familiar with it from the sound of music. I really like it, and also like the idea of nn Reid/Reed.

My husband's mn is Fredericke so I voted for Relatively familiar and not too difficult because it is close to his. Julia

Plus I also like the Sound of Music and I like the name if my husband wasnt a JR and had liked the name I would have it our list of names to use but he don't want to use it as one to carry on he thinks 2 in his family is enough. He's not one of the type that likes to carry on names unlike me and my side of the family who uses the same names over and over then uses different forms of them names also.
