Sorry this isn't a poll for this section, but wanted to update on my original poll. Thanks so much for all of the input. I asked DH last night if he would go for 'Eila' as the first name and he (naturally) shot it down. I couldn't blame him since that's what he calls my mom and I wouldn't want our daughter named 'Barbara' (his mom's name). Okay, back to square one...I dreamt about names all night LOL. And then this morning he tells me that he has a new suggestion......Eila Elaine. Elaine is his mom's middle name and I actually REALLY like it! Eila Elaine Craven. What do you guys think??? It has a lot of meaning to both of us and I was actually shocked that he would be able to handle my mom's name as his daughter's name.
Thoughts?

I like Eila, but Eila Elaine is too repetitive for my tastes. How about Eila Laine or Eila Lane to honor your mom.
You could also use your maiden name/your mom's maiden name.
If you were simply considering Eila Elaine, with no personal meaning, I'd agree with the pp that the combo was too repetitive. I completely understand the compromise, however, and with a name that holds that much meaning, I think the flow is secondary, KWIM? Also, Eila as a FIRST name is perfect for you. Unique, interesting ... completely in line with your son's name (not to mention the fact that it's your mother's name). I'd agree to pretty much any mn to secure Eila as the first! ;)
Normally I might also suggest looking into other forms of Elaine that might not have as many similar sounds as Eila (Helen, Nell, etc.), but it seems you'd be REALLY happy with Eila Elaine, as is, so I'd just put that one in stone.

Perfect! I'm so glad! I say go with it ... I *like* the similar sounds between the two names. It would be AY-lah ee-LAINE, is that right? I think I remember that from one of your other posts. I really like it, and especially since it incorporates your mama's names.
I don't consider changing, for example, Elaine to Laine as naming a baby after that person (Elaine), like the PP (no offense, PP!). My mom's mn is Mae and when I mentioned that we might name our dd's mn "May" after her (notice spelling difference), she said b/c of the spelling change it doesn't count (she was being funny but serious, KWIM?). SO we kept it Mae to honor her.

yes, that's right re pronunciation--and I know what you mean re keeping it exact if you're trying to honor a relative. I mentioned to DH that she could use 'laine' when she was older if she didn't like the other and he kind of frowned at that suggestion ;)
Thanks :)
