This is our first girl and cant decide. My husbands name is Emil (we call him Tony) so everyone really like the idea of Emily Ann (my m/n is Ann). But I cant get past it being the most popular name since 1995. We also like Abigail. This was going to be our names for our two sons had they been girls. I like the fact that we can shorten the name and call her Abby. Both sons have names that we can shorten. Any advice?

Thanks

If the popularity of Emily is all that is pushing Abigail I would go with Emily I LOVE the family conection and Abigail just about as popular as far as I am concerned. She might have 3 other Emilys but she will have 2 other Abigails/Abbys in her class too. Good Luck!

I think its a great family connection and to me abbigail isn't much less popular so I would go with the name you really like.

I agree. I have a DD named Emily, named after her 80-yr old grandma Emily. We did it for the namesake. It hasn't been that bad, though. The first two years of preschool there was another Emily in her class, but she's been the only Emily in her Kindergarten & 1st grade classes.

If you plan to actually call her Emily Ann day to day, she'll stick out from the Emily crowd, no problem. If not, perhaps a middle name that is more unusual (there are lots that come from Ann or have Ann in them-from Anastasia to Juliana to Annabel) could give you/her something to use if she hates being "Emily H" or "red-haired Emily."

What about Emilia? You could do the nn Emmy, Millie, Lia, or Mia. There is also Emeline, nn Emmy or Lainey.

Good luck,

I don't think you gain anything by using Abigail instead of Emily, in terms of likelihood that she'll share her name with classmates.

I say go with Emily Ann. You'll be more happy having a connection to it. But if you still love Abigail, go with that! They are both popular. Actually, in my area Abby is much more popular.

If you are choosing between Emily and Abigail, choose Emily. Both are VERY popular (Abigail is also extremely popular, and actually one that I hear more of lately) and the family significance behind Emily makes it more special.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but rather than going with the most popular name for a decade OR not using a name in honor of Emil, I'd simply use a less-popular (but equally-attractive) version, like Emilia, Emeline, Emelina, Emiliana, etc. And of course, any of these could be shortened to the overly-popular Em(me), Emmy, Emma or something a bit more unique/creative/interesting like Millie, Lina or even Liana or Ana (for the last form).

HTH ;)

Ps. Obviously I love Abigail as well (see siggy LOL), but it seems odd to abandon one popular, yet meaningful, name in favor of another also in the top ten. Obviously Abigail's no Emily , but it's not like you'd be giving up on using a feminine form of Emil in order to go with something not in the top 100/300/1000 ... you get the idea. Add in the fact that Abby is even more common (since it can also be a nn for other given names), and you might as well go with Emily at that point. Hopefully you KWIM.

both of those names are insanely popular

I think you should just find the girls name that you like the best without regard to naming her after anyone - especially her first name - middles are better for honoring relatives
