Neither are really my style. If I were wanting to use the nn Si for a boy, I'd probably name him Simon. :)

I agree with you completely. I like Silas much better than Cyrus (Silas got my vote) and I don't like the spelling Si for a nickname. I would go with Sy (or even just Cy if you prefer). After all, traditional nicknames often don't come directly from the spelling of the name--just look at nicknames like Dick, Bill, Bob, Peggy and Maisie (Margaret), or Jack (John). In your case, the sound you get with the spelling Cy is part of the name Silas, and you should spell the nickname however you like so that it looks right to you.

Couldn't you just combine the two names making it Cylas/Cylis. That way you have the spelling of the nn you want with the fn that you like.

I don't know if the two nicknames are supposed to be pronounced the same way - but Si looks like it would be pronounced "see" to me. I love Cy - and it's obvious how it should be pronounced (and there's the artist Cy Twombly, who many people would probably know). I like both long names - but if you're going to call your child by a nickname, I'd go with Cyrus because Cy just looks better to me. I also think of the spanish word for yes with Si. I don't know if that'd be an issue where you live.

I would go with Silas Cy or Sy it doesn't have to be spelled like the given name to work. I would not alter the spelling of Silas though.

If you don't like Cyrus, and you LOVE Silas, I don't see the problem. ;) The spelling of a nn really is secondary. If you prefer Cy, spell it Cy! You certainly don't have to "settle" on the literal shortening "Si" if you don't care for the spelling. Likewise, you don't have to use a full name you dislike or bastardize the spelling to something like "Cylas" simply to more obviously access that nn. Silas, nn Cy, makes perfect sense. ;)

Taking Cal into consideration, I prefer Silas even more -- no matter how you choose to spell the nn. I like that this option gives them each their own initials, rather than using a second C and possibly creating a pattern you'll feel obligated to continue with any future children.

I also like Simon, if you haven't considered it.

ETA: Just rethought Simon as I hit "post," as it would give you Simon & Cal. LOL Perhaps I've seen one too many AI episodes. ;)

I agree with PPs who said you should choose the given name you like best and spell the nn

Here are some other options for CY:

Cyan
Cyprian
Cyprus
Cyrano
Cyril

And some other options for SI:

Sidney
Silvano
Simeon
Simon
Sinclair
Sinjon
Siraj
Sirious
Siro

Just in case you're interested! I don't know that there are any better options there.

I've always liked the name Si, too, but my last name starts with an "S" and I don't care for fn/ln alliteration. Sigh. (LOL!) But I personally would just name the baby Si or Cy, without a "full" name. Si or Cy would BE the full name.

HTH!
