I do find both choices to be a tad outdated, but Melissa more so than Alyssa, so Alyssa got my vote. If you are open to suggestions, I also like Carissa/Karissa, Clarissa, Marissa, and Larissa and find them all to be less dated.

Being a Melissa myself, it got my vote. :o)

When I was in school, I was one of many, and I went by nicknames most of the time : Missy when I was younger - as I grew up, I didn't like this one as much. I went by Miss, Lissa (fave), or Lissie. Now I'm 27 and go almost strictly by Melissa (except my sis calls me Miss, and some other family still calls me Missy at times. Both are still fine with me since they've known me all my life.

I like my name very much, and it doesn't seem dated at all to me! I hardly ever meet anyone named Melissa anymore, even my own age (and I know there USED to be a lot of us before!) so your DD might not have to use a nn if you or she didn't want to.

Melissa would definitely be my favorite "issa" name, even if it wasn't MY name. It's way better than Alyssa IMO, more substantial but still pretty and feminine. But then again, maybe I'm more biased than most who will respond to your poll. ;o)

Good Luck with choosing!
Melissa

How about Marissa?
