I like Melanie better--it sounds less dated and more classic to me than Alison. I dislike how there are multiple ways to spell Alison, and I like how Melanie has a great historic/literary reference in Gone with the Wind. I named my sister Melanie in 1988 and it has served her well : ) FYI, she got tired of going by Mel, and is now using Mellie/Melly and Ellie. You could also use Milla/Millie, Nell/Nellie, Nia/Nina, Mina, the sky's the limit. hth, valerie
To be quite honest, they both sound a tad dated to me, but I think Melanie has more spunk so that GMV. Have you considered Melinda or Miranda?
