My 10 year old DD is Abigail Lillian. She is named after all four of her grandmothers. I'm Jewish and we use initials of loved ones who have passed. My grandmothers were Annette and Lena. DH's grandmother's were Alice Audrie and Lilly. I have always loved the name Abigail and had no idea it would be so popular. I wanted my DD's MN to be Lilly, but FIL told me that his mother had always hated that name. She was named after a family friend whose LN was Lilly. FIL's mother had always wished that her name was Lillian instead of Lilly so FIL asked me to use Lillian rather than Lilly. We honored his request.
My DD has always gone by Abby. Last year she got tired of being Abby Z so I suggesed she use "Nabby" which was a colonial NN for Abigail. John and Abigail Adams called their DD "Nabby." My Abby was going to start last school year as Nabby, but at the last minute changed her mind because the other Abby in her class decided to go by Abigail. So there was no confusion last year.
Next year Abby will be in a class with more children and is assuming that there will be other Abbys in her class. So she's decided to use her MN which she loves. She likes Lily a lot more than Lillian. We're just not sure how to spell it. Should we use Lilly which was the spelling of her great-grandmother's name or Lily which is a more typical FN spelling? Abby also likes Lili but I think that looks too cutesy. But that might be the French spelling (or is it Lilli?). As you can see, we can't decide which is a better spelling.
BTW - Even though Lily/Lillian is growing in popularity I'm pretty sure there are no 10 year old/5th graders in our town/school.
