DH and I both like the name Juliet, but both do not like the name Julie (way too many "Julies" in our peer groups throughout our lives). We've also liked the name Julianna/Juliana, but have definitely known girls with this name who were called Julie. Do you think it's because Julianna is a longer name which lends itself to people shortening it? Would Juliet (only 1 syllable shorter I guess) be somehow immune from people trying to shorten it to Julie? We've sort of ruled out Juliet because of this fear, but are just wondering if you think our assumption is legitimate.

Thanks!

I don't think anyone would take it upon themselves to shorten Juliet to Julie while she's still young. (Okay, now that I say that, *somebody* probably will, but not most people. ;-) )

There's always the chance that she may decide to go by a nn when she's older or that her friends will decide to use one -- Julie, Jules, Jule, etc. As long as you wouldn't absolutely hate that, I think you'll be fine.

Our younger DD is Julianna, and only a couple people have ever called her Julie -- probably b/c they just misheard her name or assumed that she was Julie Anna. However, we also decided in advance that we would use the nn Annie, so we always call her either Julianna or Annie. DH tested out Julie a couple times when she was little, but it never stuck.

I think Juliet is beautiful and not one that would be automatically shortened.

I think Juliet is less likely than Julia to be called Julie. But she could still be called Julie, it depends. you could also find another nn & stick with that. MY DD is Eleanor, family nn Ella but never(so far) Ellie...I HATE Ellie. I spent plenty of time the first 3 years saying, "It's Eleanor, not Ellie" People finally got it & DD(age 10) corrects them herself. BUT if DD wants to be called Ellie at some point, I really have no control over that, KWIM?

I'm always dumbfounded when other ppl take it upon themselves to shorten a child's name - but it happens. If you love Juliet, use it but be prepared to correct ppl. Hopefully, most wouldn't be rude enough to try it more than once!

If you call her Juliet, everyone else will call her Juliet. Her close friends migth get to Jules, but she won't be called what you don't call her.

I think if anything, Juliet would become Jules for short!
