Do you think your son will eventually be able to say Alaina? And is he the only one calling her Lainey? If so, I'm confused as to why you need a spelling if you don't want a NN.
My son had a speech delay as well and called his younger sister Goggin instead of Adrienne. Needless to say, he was the only one who called her that, lol. And in a year or so, he could say Adrienne with no problem.
And coincindentally, Adrienne called him Wah-wah for close to a year (his name is Noah). And another coincidence -- my youngest is named Elena (pronounced eh-LAY-nah). It's such a beautiful name. We don't use a nn for it either.
Sorry, I guess I should have read your reasoning first. I bet your son will come along with saying it soon. If you like Alaina, then keep using Alaina. I wouldn't change your daughter's name to suit him. He can still call her Lainey.

DS will only call his sister baby or "waa, waa" when I tell him to say hi to Alaina.
