Annoyed with my library

I'm a regular library patron. But there's one thing that really annoys me. I'd say about 40% of the time, a book that says it's on the shelf, isn't. :( Sometimes I'll search for 2, 3, 4, or 5 books before I find one. I usually just let it go, & look for it another time. But sometimes I'll go to the circulation desk & ask. They're usually helpful. They'll look to see if it's waiting to be shelved, then go back to the shelves with me to see if it's been mis-shelved. Sometimes they find it, sometimes they don't. But last week, a new, young person was at the desk. When I told her I couldn't find a book, she just told me to try looking in Mystery, even though the computer said it was categorized as Fiction. It wasn't in mystery. I gave up. If that happens again w/her, I'm going to at least tell het that other folks help me look. Didn't they train her to do that?

Who shelves most of the books? Does anybody know? Is it volunteers? Either we need more volunteers at my library, or we need better ones. LOL. Of course, I should volunteer...

Sounds like you are defintly frustrated, I would be too. At my library it is volunteers who shelve the books. I would complain if it happens again. I would complain to the head of the library if books are getting so mixed up.

This person should have helped you look rather than sending you to another section.

Yes, I just wondered if it was more of a problem in my library than in other libraries.

I think that some of the books I've looked for & not found have been repeats. They're probably gone for good. But this happens very often. I'll start out with a list of 5 books to look for, & might only find one. Sometimes it's waiting to be shelved, & the person at the checkout counter finds it for me. But this one young woman didn't even look.

I'm surprised I don't see this happening more at my library, 'cause when I go to shelve books, I inevitably (sp?) find others that aren't where they should be

I've had a similar problem with one particular book - Alice Sebold's Lucky.

Yes, I see that problem w/large print books too. And pb mysteries. They're on revolving racks, & they're terribly out of order.

Maybe if their glasses were that thick, the books would be put in the right place
