What are some good books for a 5yo?

I read with my 5yo (and 3yo) every night before bed and we could use some fresh books. She loves Disney stories (we own tons), and the Buggville books (we have the whole series) but I would like branch out a bit.

A few of my favorite children's book authors are:

  • Jan Brett

  • Mercer Mayer (Little Critter)

  • Norman Bridwell (Clifford the Big Red Dog)

  • Eric Carle

  • Laura Numeroff

  • The Berensteins

  • David Shannon

  • Cynthia Rylant

  • Patricia Polancco

  • Karma Wilson

If you are looking for chapter books that are great read-alouds for 5 yo.

  • Junie B. Jones series

  • Ramona Quimby books

  • Franny K. Stein series

  • Charlotte's Web

Hope this gives you some new ideas!

The Giving Tree (by Shel Silverstein) has always been one of my favorites and I have good memories of my grandma reading it to me.

Hi, lurker coming out of hiding here!

You got some great recommendations! The only thing I'd add are Ezra Jack Keates for the picture book category. He has a character named Peter that he starts out as a little boy in The Snowy Day. The following books show Peter growing up. My kindergartners love those books.

For chapter books, they really love The Magic Treehouse series. Simple stories about a treehouse that takes a brother and sister to places far away, such as prehistoric times, Egypt, and different times in history. They get to learn a little something too!

When I replied last, I forgot about Dick Gackenback, especially Harry And The Terrible Whatzit. It's been around for years but it's wonderful.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, my kiddo just brought home her first scholastic book club catalog (ah memories- I remember bringing those home from school.) I'm going to order her some books from there as a start.
